A friend told me that the 98 LS1's are slower than all the other years. Is this true or should he be kicked in the face?

 

I believe they'd be a tad slower than the '01 and '02s primarily because those two years got the LS6 Intake..

Also, a stock MN6 puts down better numbers compared to a stock A4..

Other than that, they're the same..

BARELY... and I mean barely sometimes the other years put down bigger dyno numbers. Yeah, the new ones get the LS6 intake, but they get a smaller cam built for a lower range... barely any difference... anyway, not enough to purchase a different one.

Some 98's were turds, and others ran like raped apes...

My 98 was the absolute fastest stock internal LS1 in my area for a LONG time. I was undisputed on the street, and the motor dyno'd 351 RWHP with stock internals, stock LS1 intake through Mac headers...

However there are other 98's that wouldn't make anything over 330 rwhp no matter what bolt ons you had...

 

yes you can swap for a LS6 intake.. However, it's really not worth going that route on an otherwise stock LS1 because the gains will not be felt [ 8-10 rwhp ]

However, if you plan on doing Headers, Cam, Heads, et all.. then the LS6 Intake will shine and produce good numbers

I have a 98 TA Auto with 3.23 gears [factory option GU5] and I bought and then sold the LS6 intake lol.. I went with a GMMG catback exhaust and SLP Air lid instead I love the sound and feel *some* gains from those two mods.. Next on the list is a convertor and Long Tube Headers with a catted Y-Pipe

 

stock for stock 98's, especially a4's are on the lower end of the ls1 spectrum. but who's stock

WHat i learned in school is that the 98's have bigger injectors. Also the 98 and 99 ls1s did have bigger cams a little but a lot of them were positioned on the wrong centerline so you could have a cam thats degree'd advanced or retarted and thats where that extra horse power was so some were slow others were beasts all depends on the car. Hope that helps

 

98's have 28lb injectors, 99-00's have 26lb, and 01-02's have 28lb ones. 01-02's have LS6 intakes and the stock manifolds are pretty much shorty headers.

01-02's mostly put down 10rwhp more (stock) than the other years (M6 vs. M6/A4 vs. A4).

 

I got a 98, with very few mods, they are in my sig, hope this gives you a starting point

 

As far as slower I wouldn't say that. Most don't dyno that high though. My 98 Z ran a 13.2 @ 108 bone stock. That was with what I call a Pro Driver. I ran a 13.3 at 107 myself. My dyno was not that great but it was brand new with around 500 miles on it when I dynoed it. The weather couldn't have been better at the track. . I hope I can run well past that next month when I go back to the same track with the mods I have now.

My 98 Formula ran stronger than most with such few mods. It's best ET was 12.68 at 110.6, with just 4.10s, drag radials, ported MAF, HPP3, cutout, and the free mods. It dynoed 320rwhp.

 

Patman that's pretty impressive. That's about the time I'm hoping for but I don't think it's gonna happen with the factory clutch still in there. Plus I won't be using DR's. So as long as it's in the 12's I'll be happy.

We had a '98(T/A) and a '01(WS6 T/A). The '98 was definitely faster. Although, there was Borla, LS1 Motorsports lid, B&M ripper and HPP3 on the '98, but not enough to really make a difference, in my opinion.

My hubby raced a '01 Mustang GT with a blower on it and he beat him so badly that he swore that there was nitrous on the car('98). He also never had any problem with beating '96-'98 Cobras that he came up against. Now the '01 felt sluggish...both cars were M6s. I guess we lucked out and had one of the fast '98s.

From what I see, the 98's are usually the ones with lower numbers and slower times...

If you're looking for a car though, 01/02 is the best way to go out of the box.

 

with my limited knowledge of the LS1 I'd say that the restrictive exhaust [manifolds] and, lack of LS6 Intake are the only two factors that make a 98 put down less HP and a bit slower ET than 01-02s..

Other than that, 98s are LS1s and so are 02s... and the LS1 is a LS1 is a LS1.. so educate me if there's something else that would make the 98s a pig compared to 01/02s..

in reality BONE STOCK, they may (or may not) be a LITTLE slower but the difference is negligible. once the typical bolt-ons are done, there's no difference whatsoever. a bolt-on '98 with an LS6 intake may actually be a touch faster than a similar 01-02 due to the fact that we have a slightly more agressive cam and the most aggressive timing curve of any year LS1 (28 degrees of timing from the factory.)
