How much oil does your LS1 eat?

1999 GMC Sierra 5.3 160k miles. I use Valvoline 5W30 and around 4000 miles I add a quart b/c the add oil light comes on and that lasts me till my change engine oil light comes on at 7k. I think I only put 5 quarts when I changed the oil instead of 6 the last couple times so that might be why. This time I put 6 and after 3000 miles so far she hasn't told me anything. It's really good about not burning oil.

What oil weight do I use? I was running Mobil 1 5W30. But I have since changed to Amsoil 5W30. And she has 48,000 on the clock. But yeah hardly any oil in the catch can... like a few tablespoons. I don't know if it's in my head or not, but the engine sounds smoother to me... but I just might be telling myself that. Oh and it's cheaper than Mobil 1 too

I may switch to see what kind of results I get.

The thicker Syn should do good in winter. I will try a heavier blend next oil change. Any reason why the 0w40 would not be a good idea in winter driving in Michigan? I am assuming that since in is the synthetic and does not thiken really in colder temps here that it should not matter. But, I am guessing.
