Question 5 qt of oil is it enough???

When I change my oil 5 qt is what the engine needs. No more no less.
Everybody says 5.5 qt but that much would overfill mine.
Can somebody explain this to me please???

I use M1 0w-40 and K'N oilfilter.

As long as your pressure is good and it says so on the dipstick I don't see why not.

I say 6 qts to be safe. Some people run 7. It can handle it.

What PN oil filter are you running? Long or short version? With the long K&N filter it's about 6 qts to fill mine up. Using the stock AC Delco filter it took 5.5. Are you allowing the car to sit on level ground when it's draining? Maybe your not getting all the old oil out.

The books say 6 quarts but my dipstick says full at 5.5 like the majority here. I agree that as long as your oil pressure is good you should be fine.

The 2000 owner's manual says 5.5 quarts. Mine is right on the full mark with 5 1/2 quarts.

The 4.8L in the truck takes 6 quarts, and I've heard others say they need a little over 6 to 6 1/2 quarts to fill up.

Every book on the LS1 I have personally seen says 6 quarts for the LS1. This includes a general engine manual at the Chevrolet dealership nearby. We looked it up. As I said before though, I follow my dipstick and quit at 5.5 quarts.

What book are you looking at bud? I'm holding the owners manual to my 01 model TA, and in the capacitites section on page 6-70 it says
Crankcase Oil and filter change:
3800 V6..................4.5 qts
5.7 V8..................5.5 qts
Now the 5.3 liter in my 00 Z-71 holds 6qts
All of these capacities are with the factory PN oil filter

did you fill up your oil filter before you screwed it on?? i like to fill mine up, it seems like it gives a good level reading faster. i put 5.5ish in mine.

huh? My GM service manual says 5.5 quarts with standard filter. And that's exactly what mine takes, Amsoil . Going by your dipstick is always good, but too much oil will cost you horsepower. The more oil in the crank case, the more drag on the crankshaft, therefore less power - especially high RPM. Put about 8 quarts in and go for a spirited run

Have a look...

LOL these motors aren't going to lose any horses just cuz you're running an extra half quart. if you're running a road race, its SUGGESTED to run at LEAST 6. i run 6 every day of the week. my motor hasn't complained yet.

I agree, my Firehawk use to take 5.5. ...and now when I make an effort to get ALL the oil it it takes 6qts..Try it... see what happens. Use a jack and lift one side up more if that helps. Other than that it should be fine as long as your oil pressure is good!

I would hope they wouldn't lose any power from 1/2 a quart... I should have clarified a bit more - tired. I was just worried by the guy that said almost 7 and the guy that said all the books he has seen are 6. I was just showing that my manual says 5.5. I'm not saying 5.5 is exactly what everyone needs. yeah for a road race you want extra since the gets thrown to one side then the other.
