Well for one the LS1 heads flow very well even stock and because of this the LS1 responds extremely well to mods, even simple bolt ons, headers and cam changes.

I have a friend with a full bolt on LT1 that runs the same time as my bone stock LS1.

Alright another question when I was looking...I found a couple ls1 non Ws6, am I missing out on much without the Ws6?

Also - I have cash for parts, this will be my car to work on so it isnt going to stay bone stock.

I you plan on modding your car an LS1 is an LS1 no matter what its in

The WS6 package is similar to the SS package in that it has a different lid (ram air hood) and maybe a different free flowing catback from SLP but all in all the engine is the same.

There were mild improvement each year to the engine computer etc. The 98's are probly the worst. Your best bet is 2000 up depends on what your plans are. 2001 and 2002 cars are the best since egr is eliminated and the LS6 intake is used and bigger stock injectors.

only ls1 I really have money for is 98 or 99 other than that its a lt1..so I am limited with the money I have...
But even with a 98 there are always computer upgrades I can do right to get it that much better.

I had just read somewhere recently that the 98 computer is different in some way for reprogramming/tuning, I'm not sure exactly in what way but form what was said the 98 is the "bastard child" of the LS1 ECM. Maybe someone here knows more.

Depends what your goals are.

The price differences aren't that great from 98 to 99 I dont think either.

Good luck with whatever you choose to buy.

Hey man, my car is a 98. It's far from the worst, I would have to say. As far as the original question goes. Any LS1 is a great engine. There's not that much of a difference in power in all of the years. Although the 01-02 cars did make slightly more power. Look at the top for the sticky on commonly asked questions as far as specs go between the years. Good luck with finding a car. You'll find that this site is very imformative.

Hey dude I didnt mean like 98's are bad or anything just that they were the first of the LS1's and that like anything progress has been made.

I'm sure you know what I meant though, nice car by the way

The lid on SS cars and WS6 cars is the same as on T/A's, Z28's, and Formula's. 98's are great cars. My first LS1 was '98, had fewer problems with it than my '02, and now my '04.

Ahhh, this was my age old debate when I first joined this site. I had many of the same questions as you, so check out these threads for some answers.

Previous post of mine:

"Hey dude. Before I got my T/A, I was in the exact same boat as you. I recommend the ls1:

*Will have higher resale value
*Faster out of the box
*Easier to work on
*More reliable/less problem (sans-optispark!)
*Better looking front fascia (IMO)
*More likley to find one with lower mileage

I strongly suggest you check out the first thread, it is right on the money and it got lots of replies, so it should have a plethora of juicy information for you."

Ummm. . . 99 Formula's and Trans Am's are LS1's. Firebirds are 3.8 V6's.

Read JRP's Newbie sticky.

Use the search button.

The only difference between bird's and camaro's are looks wise (interior/exterior). Use websites to help your search, Autotrader.com and Usedcars.com(<where I found mine) are a couple. Any 98+ formula or trans am will do for you. You could probably find a Z28 at a real good price too. If your looking into a new hood for your bird I suggest the raptor hood.
