I always downshifted in my '89 pickup. The factory clutch lasted 184,000 miles with no real issues. It had started slipping just a little bit. Although, the weekend before I sold it, I towed a 3500 lb boat and trailer up some pretty steep hills with no problem. Keep in mind that this clutch did not have an easy life. The first 100k miles it pretty much always had a trailer behind it, and after 125,000, when the motor was rebuilt, I raced it all the time.
'89 Chevrolet C-1500 Reg Cab, LWB, 305ci with M5, 3.73 gears, headers, chip, throttle body upgrade, Magnaflow muffler, MSD box. With all those mods I averaged in the low 15's with a best of 15.1 @91.5 mph. Not too bad for a 4200+lb truck.
If all GM parts were as durable as the parts on my truck, the service depts would go bankrupt. Hell, the only reason I had to rebuild the engine was for a broken oil control ring. I honed the cylinders, slapped 'er back together and went on my merry way. Sucker never burned a drop of oil either. I sold it and still see her around from time to time. Built like a damn rock.![Icon Lol](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies2/icon_lol.gif)

The clutch forks in a t56 have nylon shoes where they touch the clutch hub sliders (the piece that actually engages the gear) on the mainshaft and keeping your hand on the shifter could prematurely wear the nylon shoes causing a metal to metal contact. Eventually would cause a sloppy forward and back movement on the shifter.

Down Shifting is really fun wit true-dual, everyone turns their heads and
"WTF" then ur like
, so its fun but it wears down the gears, and in doing so, i'd rather replace brakes, not gears!!!
