Default Coolant...

I checked my coolant in my 98 SS the other day it has 59, 000 miles I put about 2000 on since I bought it and the coolant was grey and thick, I have never seen this before. Is something wrong other than it needs to be changed?

This would raise my eyebrow. It should be orange and watery. I would definately change it and flush the crap out of the system really good.

DEXCOOL is orange and watery when it is new. As it ages it turns brown and yucky. Chunks and sludge develop. GM says it's good for 5yr/50k miles, but the smart thing to do is not tempt fate. If you asked me I'd tell you to get your system drained, flushed, and refilled. Repeat at not greater than 3 yr intervals.

check your overflow reseivour (sp?) located under the battery, they are prone to cracking pretty bad which can let all sorts of crap get in the mix.

i read a post on it, checked mine, and sure enough it was cracked...

The overflow reservoir in my old car developed a hairline crack that led to overheating and head gasket failure.

flush, refill, keep an eye out for a leak to develop... fix the leak...

this is on one of the sites

Brenda of Meridian ID writes (2/11/03):
My 1999 Alero Oldsmobile started leaking what looked like oil. The leak came on very suddenly. I noticed a small spot under the car. I assumed it was oil gasket leaking and it was very small. Within a week it became a major leak. When I took it to the shop the mechanic said it was Dex-cool leaking from the manifold intake gasket. This is a known common problem, and it is way too early for my car to be experiencing this kind of a problem.

I am being told this will cost me $900. plus a few days without my car.
since when does dex-cool look like oil

DEXCOOL has also been known to cause acne, boils, sterility, insanity, heat rash, flat feet, and occasionally hot flashes.
