Drilling a hole in the cat, is it a good idea?
Well I got the SES light and it said that I had a bad cat, so I was thinking of driling a small little hole at the bottom of the cat to let out all the little rocks/marbles (what ever you call them) out and seeing if that would clear it out, and posibly take care of the SES light. My question is dose anyone recommend this and has anyone tried it already and been successful? Thanks again in advance!!

First off cleaning out the cat isn't going to clear you light. I don't know much about LS1 engines but I'm guessing your light is on cause the cat isn't doing it's job right not cause parts are rattling around inside.
Second any exhaust leak is a bad thing.
If TX has exhaust emitions I suggest getting a highflow to replace it. If they don't just gut it.

I don't that'll help you, sounds like it's just "toast." Is there a reason you can't get it replaced free under the 8yr/80K Federal Emissions Warranty?

:O I never thought of that
My car has only 72k miles and is a 2000, where do you go to get the free things at? Is that also apply in Texas?
(As you can tell, im coming from the 60's car's were cat's were never a main concern, and the ones that did come with it, werent controlled by a comp, simple times )

You don't need to be the original owner. Call the service manager. They'll probably tell you they have a diagnostic charge, 02's aren't covered, etc., but if it's the cat they won't charge you - and if your's is rattling and throwing a code that's got to be it. I have two friends that had their driver's side cat replaced, both weren't original owners.

Seems to depend on county.
In Houston there are no emissions tests for 96+ cars, they just scan the computer for codes.
Search Texas forum 'emission'.

most places just plug into obdII.....
the easiest way is goto your local test shop(not the one you plan to get tested at) and ask what they do for the test.

All dealers will tell you there's a diagnostic fee, and won't guarantee replacement until they check it out first. If the cat is rattling and throwing P0420 or P0430 (depending on which side it is) that's the problem and shouldn't charge you. Once you start drilling holes they're yours, and might get other codes if it senses an exhaust leak.
