CAI info - 1/4mile, 60ft times, hp gain?
modding 2001 z28 m6
regarding cold air intakes, like whispers CAI setup.
I would imagine that the hp gain from any cold air intake increases with speed at the top of the rpm power band. Insted of being on demand from a dead stop.
I could see the 1/4 miles speed being quicker after modding but the 0-60ft time being the same before and after the mod.
Is this true? Also what is the ESTIMATED HP gain, and can you notice the car pull harder at higher speeds and higher rpms.
In other words are they worth it with significance or just another minor mod chalked up as every little bit counts!

well if your doing 30mph at 1200 rpms vs 60mph at 1200 rpms the push of air into the intake will be greater from doing 60mph but since the rpm is the same it doesnt mean your engine is sucking in the more available air since it is not needed. Now if your doing 30 and 60mph at 5000 rpms the more available air will more then likely be sucked in by the intake as needed..
Hence why nobody is sure of the HP increase, cause the only way to dyno test increased air movement to effected hp increase is by spotting a fan infront of the car.
This is why I asked if there is a noticable difference at higher speeds and rpms.
but then again I am tired and could be wrong on all of this!!!

i would save the $$$ and put it towards mods that are worth it. i.e. LS6 intake, LTs, cam, heads. there is no question about power gains there.

well, i've had the SSRA on for nearly a year now. as far as i can remember, initial reaction was...better throttle response and highway WOT felt much noticeably stronger. but after 1-2 weeks, you get used to any gains small gains (as with any mods) and you don't feel it anymore.
everyone will agree that a LID and cutting out the airbox works because it's allowing more air in. well why wouldn't something that forces in more air that's cooler work?
the stock plastic panels that GM put in there was for diverting more air into the airbox. now with the SSRA you're getting a better sealed tunnel contraption that's more direct.
and i'm not spending $75-90 to dyno a little mod that does nothing standing still. it's ram air, not standair. should i go dyno the car, then ask the shop to wait 20-30 minutes while i use their shop to put on my SSRA? then redyno? because 5-10 hp differences can be attributed to better/worse weather condition of the last dyno session (not the current day's) ....so you can't use that.
even if you can prove that it does gain 5-10 hp or nothing at all...this is still like spending $75-90 dynoing the effect of LID. wtf for?
also, i just drove crosscountry (2900 miles) in a week with my SSRA on. it didn't rain for the first 2000 miles, but started to thunderstorm in Wyoming and flash flooding in Elko & Reno Nevada...then some thunderstorms in Utah. i was too lazy to take off my SSRA nor did i have a blockoff plate. my LEFT signal light went out which meant that so much water was getting through and flooding the infamous left signal housing.
lots of standing big puddles of water in Elko city, but i was being careful and didn't drive fast. but when it thunderstormed on i-80, i was still doing 75-85 which probably picked up signifcant water. i didn't check the filter or anything. just wanted to get there.

im not saying you should dyno every single mod, especially not the little ones. but ive seen too many people that have had the SSRA, SLP CAI, and so on, that said they didnt feel the initial noticable difference. and ive actually seen people say theyve led to cooling problems when you have a tranny cooler mounted in front of the radiator too. the lid and filter is as far as i will go on air intake mods. those things dont do enough to justify the $2xx.xx you will spend. but that is just my opinion, and the opinions of a few people that i trust, and that know more than me.
of course, i look at it this way, waste $200 on that, another $250 or so on a MAF, and like $50 on a smooth bellow, you get a couple ponies(less than 10???), and maybe, maybe .1 in the 1/4 mile, and all that money could have beem spent on LTs and you could have gained 30-45HP.
