If an excellent driver was mated to a factory freak ls1 in a stripper car, there is potential for 12.8 to be reached again or broken, but why chase these "records" all these years later?

SSs arent factory cars, they went to an outside shop to be modified. so the fastest factory LS1 would be a 01-02 M6 Stripper (Formula, Z28 or B4C)
if you want the fastest "stock" car, a 345 hp 01-02 car would be it. thats because SLP put headers and did other modifications. but i dont consider SSs factory cars for said reasons
oh, and yes, elevation would play key roles in this comparison. here at about 1000 feet above sea level i ran a 13.2 stock. in florida near 0 sea level it would be faster, but in colorado at 6,000 feet it would be much slower

here's a quote from the article
Critics have claimed our amazing test results have more to do with the driver behind the wheel than the cars themselves. There is no denying that Evan Smith, our resident hot shoe, has an uncanny ability for running the quarter mile, as evidenced by his 12.89 run in a stock 1999 Z28 (GMHTP 7/99). Often overlooked is the fact that several of our other staff members have netted similar results. Most recently, Rick Jensen ran an automatic-equipped, Collector's Edition Trans Am to a 13.13 at 104 mph for the September 2002 issue of High Performance Pontiac. The argument still exists that our staffers drive these cars all the time and are far more familiar with their nuances than editors at other magazines, who may possess a more intimate knowledge of minvans and SUVs.

I stand corrected, I just remember glancing the article years ago and I think around that time I started seriously thinking about getting one of these cars. It runs what it runs, although the way mine looks you wouldn't think it was an 8 year old car... factory gm flat black paint on the suspension!
