Is this a good place to start? Well, I don't have an LS1 or an F-body at all, but I had a question. Is it a good idea to start with a '93 to '97 with an LT1 as a first F-body?

definately would be a good place to start.. but if u can save a little more you can find some ls1's pretty cheap.. depends on your budget and such.. but hell an lt1 is a great motor dont get me wrong. oh yah.. and there fast

I started out with an LS1 bought it for 9700 with 62k. My buddy bought a LT1 with about every bolt on a hot cam and a stall and he beat me when my car ws stock I sprayed his *** and left him the other day. But only thing is he got his car already modded for 4500 bucks

Considering you can afford the payments, higher cost, and higher insurance, i would go ahead and get an ls1. better to do it right the first time, but the LT1 is by no means a bad motor so to answer your question - yes it's a great introduction into fast cars

unless you have money to pay for repairs and mods,or are good with engines and stuff, get an ls1 'cause they are much easier to work on...lt1's are great, but you can get at an ls1 10x easier...eg: spark plugs

It all comes down to affordability...if I sell my truck the '93 to '97 is a good price right now, but if I sell my truck and wait a while the '98 to '00 shouldn't be too far out of reach.
So, what's a good/fair/decent price for a '98 to '00?

I got an lt-1 for my first f-body and it was nothign but trouble. Took me two years just to learn how to work on it and by then i hated under that hood with a passion. If you can afford an ls1 is better for a beginner. Go to any lt1 forum and most fo the posts will read "Car misses at 3000 rpm whats wrong?" or "car bogs bad at 2000 rpm" yeah you get the picture.

i had an LT1 for my first fbody and i loved the car. the torque curve is fun just driving around town. you will not be dissappointed with an LT1. great motor, bitch to work on, but great motor. watch out for the optispark...it was a bitch. id say definitely get an LT-1. you will not regret it. and i agree with whoever said they sound meaner. i had my LT1 sitting next to my dads LS1 and mine sounded like it would rape his ***.

Since most LT1's have been worked on and most problems have been take care of, should I still be cautious if I go that route?
I should also mention that whichever I get I'm going to be driving it for at least the next 5 years (and hopefully beyond), so with that info, would it be a better idea to go with the LS1 since it's easier to work on, apparently has less problems, and not to mention isn't as old?

Either one should last a long time as long as the mileage is not already really high. There are plenty of lt1s near 200k miles on the stock engine that still work fine. Not as many ls1s up there yet, but I'm sure they will last just as long if maintained properly.

id have to say go for the ls1, they are generally better all around.
i loved the lt1 because it was so raw but in reality it had overheating issues, which i took care of somewhat, and the older technology could give you some problems suchas the optispark.
ls1's are becoming more and more inexpensive and respond a lot better to mods, so id say go with the ls1 definitely. but go test drive both to be sure.
