Default Intermittent starting problems

02 Z28 with 60,000 miles. Bought it a month ago as a second vehicle(toy). Didnt drive it for 2 weeks then went to start it and nothing. Plenty of power at the battery but nothing happens when you move the key from run to start. Took it to another, closer dealership to be fixed after talking to the place that I got it from. They said that they would pay for it to be fixed. Well they have been working on it off and on for 3 days. Said that it will start up fine, but that around every 12th to 15th time it wont. So far they say that its got power as far as the relay under the hood. That as far as they can tell the park safety switch, the ignition switch, and the lock tumbler are fine. But still working on it. Any of you guys got any ideas?

VATS
The pellet on the key (try a spare or check the resistance on it and see if it is in spec.Do a search here for VATS and you should find threads as to how you find out you key resistance specs with an Ohm meter)
Starter relay
Clutch position switch
Starter (like mentioned)

Just some ideas off the top of my head...Good luck.

Took mine to a dealership for the SAME issue, they looked at it, poked at it, tore it all apart, anyways they fixed it somehow. They dont know what was wrong but it has never done it again in the subsequent 5K miles afterwards. Wierd. I think it had to do with VATS.

I have this same problem. Mines a 98 TA with 6 speed manual. It wont start, but if i pump the clutch awhile and leave it then it'll start. It randomly will not do this though. I thought maybe it was my clutch? MY VATS is loose in my key though....

Quick update. The car is still at the dealership. they are working on it a little at a time to keep from killing the other dealer with the bill. Yesterday the service writer said that its not the vats either. They are still checking wiring on the rare occasion that it doesnt start. I told them that I wanted it out by this weekend, so, we'll see how it goes.

Picking it up today. They said that it must of been a loose connection; that they couldnt find anything wrong. $205 worth of diagnostic fees.

Those of you that have had the same problem, when your car wouldnt start, what did you do to get it to start?

My wife's car had the same problem. There's a wire in the Ignition Cylinder that has to do with a security feature of the car that tends to come loose or break off completely from turning the cylinder everytime you start your car. Have them replace it to see if that's the problem. Because if that is the problem and they don't fix it now, you'll be having your car towed back there when you can't start it.

Good luck!

Son of a....... I picked the car up Friday. Service writer tells me that they havent been able to get it not to start for a while, that it must of been a loose connection and the mechanic must of fixed it while checking wiring. Drove it Saturday to get gas and guess what? The SOB would'nt start at the gas station. So I remembered that I had asked them how they got it to start when it wouldnt. He told me that they had to hold the key over in the start position longer and it would eventually kick over and start. So I rock the key over into the start position and hold it there. At around 12 seconds or so the starter engages and it fires right up!
There is a good connection between the battery and the starter.
I'm at a freakin loss..........

Makes me want to say the hell with my jacked up back and get out in the shop and get my 70 done. At least that one I can work on.

Thanks for keeping us updated...

Of course, you have to take it back. You brought the car to them for a problem, you paid them money and it isn't fixed.I know it sounds like the start of an even bigger headache but,I would take it back.Dealers aren't known for being thorough.

I think this whole "hold it for 12 seconds" thing is a definate clue and the dealer just hasn't explored it very well.

Good luck...
