Default Got a small problem

I got a clunk noise at the rear of my T/A. It varies with speed at slow speeds. You can't hear it at higher speeds other than at a slow cruise. No vibrations at all. The car still performs very well though. I'm thinking u-joint, what other possibilities?

Awesome! Yeah, I let the tied up hooker out as part of the process of elimination. I'll check out that torque arm and tranny mount when I get back to work on Monday. Thanks for the suggestions.

Go buy you a bottle of rearend additive from the GM dealership and after you put it in find you an emply parking lot and drive in circles. I'm not talking about doing donuts. Just real easy clockwise for a while and then go counterclockwise a couple of times. What you want to do is make that differential work. And a tight turn will do that.
This is the most common cause of what your describing. You usually can't tell where the noise is coming from. Just wait till you install aftermarket parts with poly bushings. You think you got noise now? But this is where I would start at.

I work at a dealership, so that won't be a problem at all. I just dropped it off back at the shop Friday night and haven't had a chance to look at it yet. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll check it over real good tomorrow afternoon.

After further inspection of the T/A's "clunk" noise, we've come to the conclusion that it's the driveshaft. According to one of the guys at the shop, those driveshafts have an inner core that's bad about breaking and that's where the "clunk" is coming from. Anyone else ever heard of that happening?

well, after replacing the driveshaft with a custom steel driveshaft, the noise is still there. Now I'm lead to think that it may be a spider gear or possibly the carrier. It's deff. not the ring gear or the pinion. Bit it's for sure coming from the rear end now.

I have only heard of the clunking driveshaft on the Mustang aluminum units. try some fluid. Might be play in the gears?

I pulled the diff cover off today. Aside from the beat up driveshaft, there were two teeth busted off the ring gear.
