will it hurt to run straight headers on my LS1?
i am going to put pacesetter longtube headers on my 1998 LS1 trans am. i don't have enough money right now to buy the full exhaust becuase i am getting a deal from a friend on the headers.
My question is will it hurt my motor to run just headers until i finish my exhaust?
car is not a daily driver but is driven 2-3 times a week.
any input will be helpful

Um?.... Why dont you buy the headers...and wait till you get the y pipe to install everything?
You will run open headers for 1 day, then you wont want to drive it anymore til you get it finished.

Ran open headers on mine for about 3 months, few times a week with no problems. Some people say its a headache, but if I could drive mine around 24/7 like that I would, hell I love it.
I know it can damage the O2s from getting cold air back in or whatever so most people run a few feet of straight pipe off of the headers and it fixes that problem. Sounds pretty good too, just extremely loud.

its pretty loud, but i dont think its too loud. i dont like the sound on the highway cruising...but rev it up, or go WOT...and its awesome.
goto a muffler shop and have them cut you two 16'' pieces of 3'' pipe and get 2 bandclamps and put them on the ends of the headers. the fresh air isnt good for the o2s, and where some people in this thread have done it and been fine...better safe than sorry.

Other than the fresh air from your 02s, there's nothing wrong w/ it. Ran mine for a few weeks. Sounds freakin' awesome. Once i got my exhaust put on, i missed the open engine sound so i installed dual cutouts right after the headers and open them up all the time, i love it. Just be careful about the sound police. It's one FAT ticket because you are not only polluting, but it's a monster sound violation. I've been pulled over before for speeding w/ my cutouts open, cop didn't say a thing. It's at your own risk.
People are gonna give you a hard time because it's really loud... and we're not lying... it is.

drove my car 20 minutes or so open headers, all highway. not for a dd at all, its loud, obnoxious, unrefined. honestly it really doesnt sound good inside the car, but outside i'm sure it sounds good. i have a cutout in my I pipe, its not the same as open headers, but its close, i love it for WOT and having fun on the street, but i usually close it for DDing
