Cam only good idea?

Cam only good idea?
I have a 1999 Z28/A4 with an MTI lid, and smooth bellows. I was wondering if it is a good idea to have a cam installed w/out doing the heads? I really just want the lope for my own enjoyment, not so much for a big gain. The car is a daily driver.

lol you think it's just a matter of changing cams and being done with it, you need about a G for just the cam job, cam springs pushrods oil pump timing chain new gaskets new bolt, tool for springs, tool for lifters, tool to hold air in the cylinder's as you are getting the retainers off of the springs. then the tune.....so it's about a G and change for a cam job. all that money spent on a sound and not so much of a large gain....
oh yeah also depending on what cam you may have to change your stall, so pony up about 750 for the stall alone.

I just now noticed you were an A4 car. Like reject said, you will need to match your stall with the cam you put in. Not to mention the tune you will need to take advantage of the new cam.
I remember first getting into modding my car and having big dreams. You have to start small first.

Everyone seems to be giving the same advice I would give from one newb to another, but to answer your question, I'm doing a cam-only car. Just under $1G in parts. Cam, springs, pushrods (not needed), LS7 lifters (not needed), oil pump, timing chiain set. I'm swapping heads, but only to another set of stockers because I don't want to wait for mine to get fixed (broke a bolt in them). I'm going to take the stockers I bought cheap apart and replace the valve guides.
I'm going to do all the install work, then drive the car to Speed Inc. in Chicago to have them give it a full tune. With the miles that are on my car, they said I might need a new MAF to get the best results from the tune.
I also just now thought that I might need injectors...
So, yes. "Cam only" is a great option for these cars, at least as my opinion stands right now. A lot of people are making great power in daily drivers with stock unported and un-milled heads.
Ask questions on here, but only to give you an idea of what you're talking about when you ask whatever shop what direction you should take.
Good luck!

hem said he just wants a small cam, so he could go with a low duration tight lsa and keep the stock stall he said he just wants it for the sound, so... if u buy the ls6 springs a cam with a 112 lsa with 220 or lower duration u should have exactly what ur looking for without spending a 1000 dollars. u dont HAVE to buy new push rods($170) and new timing chain($30) there is no tool for the lifter dont know what hes talking about there u just have to rotate to get them to pop up after u take of the rockers and new every other damn thing in the world especially if ur not going with a large lift cam which u can buy from like comp or crane for $300 and u can rent the valve spring compressor tool and valve holding tool from autozone for free( u just have to have money up front then they reimburse u) so if u want to do something u dont have to go all out like some of these people say, although its worth it, and can get the job done in a way more respectable price range

you can make them yourself depending on how skilled/patient you are.
lol rotate that cam to pop them up, you may get lucky this time and the next time, but let it be known....one WILL fall down one day, have fun with that

regarding the "special tool" to hold lifters up....
since i did not trust my luck, and wasn't about to get *** raped for a hundred dollars for 2 metal tubes, I chose to stop at WalMart's hobby/crafts section and picked up two 5/16" wooden dowels for like $.99 each, took a piece of sandpaper and made one end of each rounded like a bullet so they slid in easier....it easily works as well as the "special tool" that everyone rips us off, i mean, charges $95 + shipping for....
