Motor Oil color
Well I switched my car and truck over to Castrol 0W-30. I've had my truck for 6 yrs, 130,000 miles. Bought it with 86,000, now has 216k. ANd had always ran MB1 5-30. Changed every 3,000 miles. Had the pan off it a yr ago and it was 100% spotless, bright shiny silver, I was amazed.
At 3,000 miles the oil would be pretty dark, almost black. This is my first time with castrol 0-30 in her, it's been 4,000 miles and the oil is almost as dark as the mobil would have been at 3k. And I do alot of highway driving, never any city.
The Chevy dealer my dad works at uses Quaker state. I have seen a few engines taken apart, with probly normal 3,000 mile oil changed and they are yellowish color, with sludge! ANd one thing I noticed while on the service bay, at 3,000 miles the oil would just about look brand new, not black at all. So I would come to a conclusion that the oil isn't doing it's job of removing contamination from the engine, and preventing any further contamination from happening.
I PMed Patman asking him and never herd from him, so I'd like the opinion of you guys since your all so smart

It's been proven countless times by UOA's that GC 0W-30 is far better than any of the overpriced synthetics Exxon/Mobil now sells. Mobil 1 was once a good oil, but it has gone downhill since Exxon bought the company. They've pretty much milked the name for all its worth

I don't think the OP was trying to start yet another m1/GC pissing match. His question was whether it's a good sign that oil comes out looking dirty on the hypothesis that it means contaminates are in the oil and not the engine.

Mobil makes a 0w40 weight that thins out to a 30 weight when hot. My problem with it was near the end of it's life it was probably breaking down further than that to near a 20 weight as tapping on my lifter came back around the 3k mileage mark. It's still a step up over their 30 series as my engine would drink that stuff and have the low oil light come on before the 1k mile mark expired...

What exactly is your question jim? I think it is kind of a balance. If the oil is super clear then the detergents aren't doing their job. If it comes out black as tar there might be some issues with the oil not lubricating as well as it could, causing higher wear. That's just what I think. Try asking someone over at Bobistheoilguy.com

well like tonight i changed the oil on my brothers 386,000 mile S10, had mb1 5-30, went 3,800 miles in alittle over a month, the oil was black. You couldn't really read the markings o nthe dipstick. It's been this way for yrs on his truck and my S10 also. But our motors are clean inside, so I would conclude the oil has done it's job of cleaning, and now keeping the engine clean.
Now I'm at 4200 miles on castrol's 0-30, and the oil is pretty dark, but not as black as the mobil would have been. We both do lots of highway driving, so it's not like the oil isn't getting nice and hot.
I just put castrol 0-30 in his truck for the first time tonight, so we'll see. A OA wouldn't tell you anything such as it's cleaning abilties would it?

oil getting dark means its doing its job cleansing the inside of the engine. The main reason oil does get black is that its taking the little bit of carbon gets past the rings and distributing it in the oil. If the oil is clean it means that carbon is probably at the bottom of your oil pan in the form of sludge
