Default Noob rear diff question

I'm taking my car in for service (under warranty) this week because my rear diff is making some odd squeaking/thumping noises. If it turns out it needs replacement, I'm going to pay the difference in cost to upgrade to a 12-bolt. My question is: which gear ratio should I go with? This car is my DD so I'd like to keep some comfort level and fuel economy but added performance would be nice too. What's a good compromise? Also, are there any specific brands to look for or avoid?

Avoid richmond gears, they make noise in every make and model I have heard.

if you dont drive top end then go with the highest gear you can get . gears in our cars can put cars to shame on the street and the track . though if you like to have fun on the interstate or road course you will top out sooner . weigh your options .

3.50's are good if you have to do highway driving. If you do alot of in town driving 3:73's.. I have 4:10's but it isn't the best for freeway drives.. but it works.
