Best way to spend $3500 on mods?
Heres the scoop.....I have a 98 M6 T/A with 125,000 mi. The car is mainly stock except for a cold air kit and some vette rims. Last year I had Sixspeeds inc rebuild and mod my tranny.
Im looking to add some extra ponies (like to be puttin out round 400hp) one way or another, and have about 3,500$ to do so. I don't intend on taking it to the track.....if I did, it would only be the occasional autocross.
One of my buddies says, "supercharge the damn thing.....if it blows....buy another used LS1 and throw it in". My other buddy says, "make the HP natural by adding heads, cam, and rebuild original engine components with performance mods."
I would like to have a reliable 400hp that will start when I turn the key, not devour mass amounts of fuel, and not explode in 2,000 miles. I see this kind of HP and reliability and efficiency out of vettes and GTO's. What should I do guys?
Thanks much!!!

personally put 2k into a 12 bolt or a 9", used will be around this price.
Then take the rest of the money and do LTs, LS6 intake, exhaust, cam, valve springs, tune.
Depending on the tune and cam, you can get 400 RWHP with ease.

I wouldn't listen to any of these guys, most car guys have the mindset "if a little is good, and a lot is better, then too much is just right" (I myself often think this way too). If you just want 400hp, all that you need is the basic boltons and a medium sized cam. You can do it for less than $3,500 if you do the work yourself.
You don't need a rear end if your have 400hp and are not drag racing. The chances of breaking it are low and if you do, just buy another used 10 bolt and put it in...There is no reason for a $2,500 rear end.
You definitely don't need a turbo or supercharger for 400hp, don't let people try to talk you into trying to make as much hp as possible.
Start with the boltons, LS6 intake, headers, y-pipe, exhaust, ported and polished throttle body, etc. When you are done with that, add a cam and you should be happy, if not you can always add heads later or even go a different route, i.e. turbo, supercharger, etc.
If you have any money left over, do yourself a favor and put it in a IRA.

If he only wants 400hp, he does not need a turbo, it is not always about making the most horsepower possible. He wants 400hp, he can get that easily without a turbo.

TSP H/C Package- $2000-2300 (This comes with EVERYTHING you need and at 125k you should really replace your lifters :-) )
Pacesetters LTs from TSP $389
TD's from TSP $450
LS6 Intake from on here or eBay $250-350
P&P TB $70-150 depending on if you want bling or no bling.
Lid- $50
NGK TR55 or TR6- $20
Plug wires- $50
Now assuming you can do the work yourself, you have a VERY nice setup, capable of well over 400 HP. Into the 450s possibly. You will need a tune though, and that can get pricey.

he's not takin the car to the drag strip. only to autocross seldomly. he won't need a 12 bolt for hard take offs. I would get this.
Heads 1k
Moderate to aggressive cam 1k
fast 90/90 1.1k
I would also opt to get Katech connecting rod bolts. $200-$250.
Tune.
and for those you have to have headers, ory, and exhaust to get the use of all those other mods.
that can put you around 450 to the wheels in an M6 depending on your heads and cam...
