40 roll... 1st or 2nd?
Ok, stock 3.42 gears (M6), stock 2002 cam. What gear would you start in?
I used to be in 2nd, but I've been experimenting with 1st lately.. Where does the 02 cam start losing power? My rev limiter's at 6600, but I usually only spin it to 6200.

i've got an auto so i can't tell you for sure, but the only advice i can give you is to just try it i guess. but i think you would prolly want 2nd thats prolly to fast for 1st gear and if not you will prolly be shifting to 2nd in about 10 sec anyways so might as well prolly go to sec. but i don't know since i'm an auto.

40 in first gear would put you around 4800-4900 rpm which would probably show on the tach as 5000-5100 rpm
it might work out for you if you do start from first gear but you might just spin the tires instantly anyway
im an LT1 car which puts my torque a little lower in the rpm band so i usually start from 2nd gear, first gear is pretty much out of the question for me since if i tried it my tires would instantly break loose and then i'd have to shift
but you will just have to do some experimenting

Most my roll races are at 35-40mph roll's, and I ALWAYS stay in 1st....1st @ those speeds snap your neck....
granted I dont have any traction issues, it hooks like a bitch and goes, but I have 315's out back and LCA's and a spohn adjustable torque arm and stage 2 RAM clutch....
I have never tried a 40 roll in 2nd, but @ 40 in 1st, im at 5k and I always shift at 6...its enough snap to quickly yank on the car your racing, and if your a fast enough shifter, the 1 to 2 shift shouldnt affect you what so ever.
heres a quick video of me in a 40 roll race with my buddys full bolt on 2000 camaro Z28...the Z28 is the camera car.,.

and a better video of a 40 roll against a 333whp turbo prelude....

1st just get used to shifting quick... in second its going to fell like a cow from 40 compared to first like they said earlier 35-40 first gear it will snap your neck just have some good tires... i have 305/35/18 nitto dr's and granatelli lowering springs no other suspension mods and it hooks no problem only brakes loose alittle when i shift into second and if you do a 2nd roll be at 55mph... but me personaly will not race above a 40 roll.

I experiemented with my brother once. he kept it in he same gear and same speed. It didn't make a difference, the outcome was the same. I think it would depend on some things. can you drive? because it is a very quick shift. what are you racing and where are they in their powerband? either one will work.

I would start in 2nd.. that little first gear spurt may/may not help..granted the shift will be quick, you will still roast em if you have some shitty tires.
Me personally I would start in 2nd..then again I'm not stock..and I have 3.50's in the back.
I'll still probably blow off the Mickeys though..

Cool, so after some testing with my friend's stockish vette, 1st gear seems to be the better choice if I can hit that first shift well. 40-120ish (top of 4th), we're dead even starting in 2nd. So with him starting in 1st, me in 2nd, he would jump out a car, and depending on if he hit that shift, he'd stay out there and win by a car. So it's a definite advantage, but I'll need the driver mod to make it consistent.
And luckily, I'm slow with 315's, LCA's and PHB on stock springs with 24# of air, so I don't spin much at all, haha. I think my clutch likes 2nd gear better though, lol..
And I should be dyno'ing soon, so I'll find out exactly where the stock cam makes power. It doesn't seem to like spinning up to 6500 though.. He gets me when I do that.
Sorry if it's a repost, but thanks for the replies

dude why do you have a stock cam cars rev limiter set to 6600 , or let alone shift at 6200. I may be completely wrong but it dosent make sense to spin a cam that small that high...only sounds like its making power. When my car was stock i won a lot of 40 rolls from first, and unless you shift like a grandma i think that would be the best bet.

Lol, yeah, I've only spun it that high a few times and it definitely doesn't make any power up there. The dude that tuned out my codes set the limiter higher mainly so I wouldn't have to worry about hitting it.
I shift a little around 6k though. I'll find out exactly when I make power on the 2nd at the dyno. I'm assuming it's fairly low since it's the truck cam.
