Default stupid oil capacity question

So my Haines manual said the oil capacity for my 02 LS1 is 5.5 qts with a filter change. Did my oil change with 5.5 (ok, maybe 5.7) qts and the dipstick shows oil an inch ABOVE the cross-hatched "operating range." First, did I use too much oil? Second, is this a problem? Should I drain some out?

Hey, this is NEWBIE tech.

Hey, this is NEWBIE tech.
when changing your oil did you fill your filter before installing and then fill the rest? or did you fill it all after installing an empty filter? also whas this before or after starting it you checked the oil level? something simple I do is fill the filter with half a quart of oil or until its full and then install then pout the other 4-4.5 quarts in let it sit for a moment check it. then start it then kill it and doublle check. being a little over the fill mark shouldnt hurt anything so dont be to concerned just make sure you are nvr low on oil. some one else will probly recomend something different but this is how I do mine. also Once in a while I use an old hot rodders trick to prevent lifter tap by puting a pint of tranny fluid in.

Thanks for the quick response. I had filled the filter and checked the level before I started the engine.

probably just draining down still. Let it run and then kill it and let it sit for a while on level ground then re check it. You cant be that over full on 5.5 qts....

a lot of people that run these cars on a road course, myself included, run a full quart over what it recommends. It won't hurt anything but may burn it up over time. Running a quart over helps prevent oil starvation during hard cornering.
