Default This Z28 Camaro...a steal or a headache?

so i'm in the market for a new car and i found a REALLY good deal on another camaro it's a 98 Z28 with only 77,000 miles for 3,500.

the guy says it'll pass smog easily, is a clean title, but that he sprayed down his motor with a hose and now the check engine light is on and it drives like crap.

could he mess up his engine *that* bad by just spraying down his engine with a hose? if he could, what the hell happened that hose water did that to his car?

and this is what he said in the email

"its clean title, it will easily pass smog, and the electrical problems occured when i washed the motor. idk what i sprayed down but now it runs like crap and now the check engine light is on... this car is worth wayyyyy more than im asking... this all jsut happened at a bad time..."

if he's lying is it still worth picking up?

well electrical...not so much.

but even if it cost 1500 to fix i'd still come out ahead.

what im worried about is that i dont like the idea of buying something and knowing it's not gonna run without work.

Wet alternator, water in cylinders, water in MAF, water in oil (Unlikely), water around knock sensors...

Take your pick.

Sounds like a raw deal. Don't walk, run away from it.

Hook up a scanner and see what the codes are. You should be able to make a better decision from that point.

Who the f**k sprays a motor down with water, anyway?

I agree with the above, if you've got the experience to fix it go for it other wise your heading into an uphill battle when it comes to electrical issues!

i used a little water out of a spray bottle followed by a rag on my engine to clean off road grime and i stay away from all electrical components but he must have drowned it to make it do that. but if he hit one of those fuse blocks dirrectly with water man theres no tellin what he shorted out even possibly the computer. get an OBD2 code reader and scan the codes you can get a good idea if it's messed up bad by what codes it throws but if it's a clean car and the engine doesn't knock i say go for it.

If you have some automotive knowledge or you want to learn, this might be a good deal.

The guy is full of ****, he knows what's wrong with it.

Look at it this way, if you fucked up your car. Would you really turn around and sell it for half of what it is worth? < Not really. . . . . . . .

I have hosed down the engine bay, used cleaners to clean off dirt etc.. didn't have an issue with the Ls1. HOWEVER, I did this with my 89 GTA back in the day, and I used a pressure washer. I knocked the TPS out of calibration, and it ran like crap, SES light on (because it doesn't see the right voltage at a given throttle position). Actually did the same thing with my Buick GN back in the day, but this time, water got between the coil pack and the ECM.. it would have anyay, the gasket had rotted out.

It could be a bunch of things. The fix is more than likely not expensive. Paying someone to find the problem could be though. This would be best for someone who knows what to look for and has the tools to check.
