Thumbs up found the limmet of the stock block

well, i got the car together and ready to run friday but we got rain and lots of it. called saturday they say they will be racing, so i load up and head to the track. it was so windy they said 1/8 mile only and it took them over 3 hours to dry the track. so anyway.
go up for 1st pass and car went 7.0 @ 99 i think it was, i was just making sure everything was ok. had a 2.3 60 foot on motor so i knew the track wasnt great but i was one of the first cars to run.

figure since its only 1/8 mile im going to pill it up to 250 shot, so i do that, put the spray plugs in it put a nitrous tune in it, and drop 1/2 pound out of the tires loosen the front shocks 2 clicks to try to help with crap track.

go up, put the car on the trans break light drops i let it go. as soon as i did it blew the tires off the car, shift light was on instantly tack was pined at 10,000 rpm and i hadnt gone 15 feet!!!! i jumped back into it to see if i could get it to go, and she was rapping so i killed it, coasted down the track and pulled off.
towed to trailer, pulled the plugs and 3 of them look like i dropped them off a building, all crushed. the cold weather, cold track, poor prep and 4 year old tires didnt do to good getting the power to the ground

got home, pulled the heads, found 3 brocken pistions, cracked the block in 5 or 6 spots, smashed every valve to every pistion. lol
pretty crazy.
so i know now, that a stock ls1 with used valve springs will not rev to 10,000 rpm. however the crank and rods seem to be fine!!! i could not believe i didnt put a rod threw the block.

but after i did all the math and figured out what i paid for the motor, parts i sold off the motor, the fact that i can put the cam into the ls2 i have sitting on the stand im into that motor for no money, accually im up almost $200 on it, and i can still sell crank and rods and scrap the block. im guessing i can be up another $100 bucks easy. lol

i had a great time with this set up, proved that the stock motor will take more then most people think and i used the car more this year then i have in the last 5, car shows, street race, street cruz, i had a blast and had no real money tied up.
going to put the cam in the ls2, send the heads to tea to have then cnc and new springs, and toss the ls2 in the car for next year.
cant wait.

so for those with stock ls1's, keep it under 10,000 rpm.

well it wasnt 10,000 rpm it was atleast 9,000 and i shut my rev lim off in my car because i was running my solid roller to 8,500+ so i took the rev limiter out to tune that high, never thought to put it back in.

Damnit man! Spin that bitch to the moon.

Looks like I need to cut a few lbs out of the my ole girl and see if I can't knock a few tenths off. You were faster than me with a LS1 and now I won't have a displacement advantage.

nope, you can tune above 8,000 rpm on hp tuners. i was spinning my lsx solid over 8500.

dustin, lol, i was 3260 this weekend. and i am going to have the heads cnc'd so between that power and the extra cubes i would think i should be able to run the local 9.50 class with 100 to 150 shot

I'd like to get mine to 3100 race weight and bump the kit a little. Maybe get an 8.999999 before I spill GM parts all over the race track.

With your weight, the extra displacement, and much better heads, I think you can get there on the same pill you had in there with the small motor.

yea, we shall see. if i have time to tinker with it this winter i might do a lexan windsheild and a couple other cheep/free weight reductions as well. we shall see.

im thinking just with tea doing the heads i should see a good 20-30 hp gain plus the extra cubes. we shall see tho

Welcome to the club!

Damn, you were spinning 9-10K!

My carnage was identical, except my cause was from from a loose fuel solenoid wire.

I've been planning on cutting the trunk. What ga steel did you use? How much weight did you save?

I also plan on cutting and raising the floor where the lower rear seats were for muffler clearance. Also cutting in a small tunnel under the pass seat for the exhaust. I'm going to build aluminum exhaust/mufflers, but I have to keep it from dragging first.

Hell, i've still got stock K-member, uppers, and lowers.

I drive my car every day, so I think lexan is a bad idea for me.

I've fallowed all of your threads about this car with that junkyard motor. I've been very impressed! I wish i could trash a motor and not even care haha. I guess if i ever blow my engine, i'll just use the LS2 out of my TBSS and call it a day.
