Default Timing tricker????

I have tried the reverse timing tricker mod and it seems to work very well. I used a specific resistor and got about 3-4 degrees of retard. The Scanmaster showed it was 140 degrees IAT. I think Im going to put a variable resistor(potentiometer) in the plug and try that out. I should be able to dial up the IAT I want and effect timing as much or as little as I like( in theory). Anyone try this. I have a 6k potentiometer in hand and will try it soon. The only thing I can think of off hand is the pot starts at 0 ohms and goes to 6k. At 0 would there be a posibility of damaging the computer? If so.....i guess I would have to be careful and adjust it while reading the scanmaster to be sure not to go too far off scale. Guess I could mount it in the cockpit so I can dial up the IAT temp I want as I watch it.

Feedback? Experiances?

Get a 4k resistor and put it in series with a 0 - 2k pot. that way you never short it to zero. Or even 1k resistor and 0-5k pot. Of course you understand what I'm saying. Later.

Well....I did it. I used a 340 ohm resistor inline with the 6k resistor. I scroll the LS1 scanmaster until it shows ATS (air temp sensor) and then turn the dial. Goes from 38 degrees to 154. Seems to be about a three degree differnce on timing from one end of the scale to the other (38-154). Ill do some more runs and log the differences. This should atleast hold me over until MSD or Ramchargers comes out with thier timing controllers.

383LQ4SS, did you get any more dinfinitive results with the timing tricker pot?

well..all it really did was confirm I was pulling out as much timing as possible. If I went to about 120 degrees F on the IAT it pulles about 3-3.5 degrees out. If I continued to increase IAT i did not get added decrease in timing. But it was nice to know I was taking out all I could. Or just enough if I only wanted a one or two degrees. Does that answer the question?

Ah, interesting thoughts...
Now it you just had LS1 Edit, you could make your own from the cockpit adjustments to timing for running Nitrous! I am sitting here looking at the IAT Vs. MAP vs. Timing curves as I write this.

The factory PCM is set to remove 3 degrees of timing at WOT above 50 degrees celcius. That means if you turn it anywhere above 50c it will only pull the 3 degrees. BUT it you had LS1 edit, you could set the tables any way you wanted for example, at 50c -2, 60c -3, 70c -4, 80c -5. It would be very easy to do!

So, now that you guys thought of it I am off to the nearest radio shack!

Holy crap....no way! I never even thought about that. That opens a whole new ball game. I have LS1 scan master that I watch as I set the IAT temp in the cockpit. If I knew exactly what temp would bring what timing in and could set it...that would be great. Set for some really good timing advance with the IAT at 30 degrees F to run NA..then set it for 3 degrees less at an IAT of 80 F to run a decent shot and then even set it for 6 degrees retard at 120 F to run a much larger shot....or anywhere in beteen. Would this work? Basically it would just be seting a known value of retard so you could select it when desired. Hmmmmm?

Hehe..I know. I think it will be fine. Ive been driving around for a while with the IAT potentiometer ( 10k ) and just selecting the temp (timing) I want. I would just kind of guestimate what temp gave what timing...But if it where mapped out and I knew it..hell that would be just like running a timing control box. SWEET!

383LQ4SS, you could get a rotary switch with say 13 positions and put known values resistors between each post and make a numbered plate for behind it to indicate the timing retard/advance.

I used this instead of the the pot that came with the MSD Boost Timing Master I had on my turbo/injected VW sandrail. I could tell how many "clicks" retard I was putting in by the number of clicks off of full counter-clockwise I was. If I was running 2nd gear only hill, I would have it at 5 clicks. If I was running a 3rd gear hill, I'd click in 2 more clicks. If it was hot, I'd click in more.
