Default Who does freeze and fill method??? Might buy pump..

I have been filling my own bottle and others using the "Frezze and Fill" method. A lot cheaper than going to Jeg's to get it filled. They want $4.00 a pound and I can do it for around $2.50 a pound.

Seems to work pretty good until lately.

The first bulk nitrous I bought was in mid August. Nice and warm temps outside and filling was great. I just left the smaller bottle in my freezer for about 2 hours, hook up the lines, turn on both bottles and WHAMO, fill to the brim with N20. The last few pounds I couldn't get out, the outside temp has been around 70-75.

I'm on my 2nd bulk N20 now. Since it has been cooler outside, my garage doesn't get as warm and I can't get the bottles to fill up all the way. So first guess is that the bulk bottle pressure is not high enough.

I installed a gauge on the bulk N20 and I'm reading around 700 PSI. Lets warm it up a bit. I get a electric blanket, wrap it around the bulk N20 tank and turn it on. After checking the pressure every hour or so(8 hours total time), it gets up to around 900 PSI.

Pulled bottle out of the freezer that has been in there for 3 hours, hook it up, and only 5-6 pounds go in, WTF... The bottle that I was filling, was a 15lb bottle with about 3 pounds of N20 already in it.

So when it was warm out, I didn't have a gauge on the 1st bulk bottle, since it was filling up perfect everytime until the last few pounds, so I don't know what the pressure was then.

I am thinking of buying a N20 pump if I can get a good deal on a new one. Do any of you know who sells them cheap?

Hope I'm not the only one having these 'problems' Any serious comments welcome....

Bill

I always do the freeze n' fill method for the 1st 10 or so #s. After that, I have to use the pump for the last drop if I want the bottle topped off, which is almost always.

Should I leave mine in longer than 3 hours? I usually turn the valves off when I don't hear the noise of N20 being tranfered.

Might be a dumb question but, is it possible to FREEZE the N20 liquid in the bottle if you leave it in the freezer too long?

What brand pump do you have? What other accessories do you have to go along with it?

Well, I got the bulk N20 bottle pressure up to 1,000 PSI and left my bottle in the frezzer for about 3 1/2 to 4 hours. I filled it up almost full, I think I shut the valve off too soon.

Any other idea's???

I leave it in the freezer for about 3-4 hours, and then fill it up till the noise stops, then turn the NOS brand pump on.

Italso helps to be in Texas, where it feels like the * never drops below 100 so the Big bottle pressure is always up

What other accessories do you use with you pump?

That Texas heat sure will keep the bulk N20 bottle pressure up. I like my weather here better though...

About what are you paying for N20 down there? I'm from Columbus, OH.

Freeze and fill is the way to go without a pump. For some reason I have never been able to get more than 7-8lbs in a bottle if it isn't completely empty. Empty bottles fill much better in my experience when not using a pump. Why? I don't really know.Must be a pressure difference issue.

Sometimes the freeze fill helps you to know when the mother bottle is empty also. The people at my buddies shop try to mark everything down so they know when they are empty, but things happen. I would say your mother bottle problems are due to the mother bottle being to cold. To bad you can't put the mother bottle in the house

So, turning the smaller bottle upside down helped fill better?

Guys, when filling nitrous your fill will depend on numerous things.. (i have filled hundreds of bottles) first how full is the donor bottle? what temp/ pressure the donor bottle is... what temp the fill bottle is... you WILL get a more dense charge with a cold empty fill bottle.. i used to put mine in a vacuum then fill it. i do not know how anyone could NOT get a good fill with a pump... the pump forces NOS into the fill bottle.. you will not get a dense fill when a donor bottle is low or the temp/ pressure is low in the donor bottle. fill stations are NOT cheap.. you may be able to find one on ebay... but they have to work under high pressure and that creates expense... normally you will not get a dense fill when the fill bottle is warm with high pressure from filling or if it started at room temp.. bottom line the best fill will come from a FULL donor bottle with 8-1100psi and a fill bottle frozen(overnight) or just opened and emptied will chill it as will a bucket of ice and water to help... NO nos will not freeze in a bottle.. just the pressure will drop. hope this helps...
