Default Spraying in 4th gear a4?

Will spraying in 4th gear cause anymore harm then spraying in 3rd 2nd and 1st? I dont plan on doing this but would like to know. I been told that the tranny will go out real quick if sprayed in 4th gear. Does anybody have some info on this? Does any body do this?

My a4 '97 if I hit overdrive pinging would start, not good. You have to watch the rpm's as you can lug the motor in 4th. Also depends some on rear gearing.

I agree with the above post. 4th( overdrive) would most likely bog the motor which normally causes detonation on spray. Also I have a Century built tranny in my fast car and they say its strong enough to race into 4th at wot(and I`ve done it many times), but a stock tranny isnt strong enough to race in 4th you`ll burnup the clutch pack.

This is a highly debated subject. I'm a shift sprayer, no problems, stock tranny.

i have a built century tranny and don`t spray threw shifts. Granted I have alot of power going threw it. Stock and spray you should be okay. I wouldn`t do it. Get a window switch and be safe.

I have a MSD digital window switch turned on at 3500 and turned off at 5800. I also have a 3800 stall. If i spray in 4th on the highway over 125mph with the window switch. Will the trany hold up? Has anybody done a topspeed pull with nitrous using 4th gear? Jus curious if the stock tranny cand handle this kind of abuse.

Yes, top speed pull n2o 4th 135/140mph like a half mile uphill incline, that's were the pinging started, overdrive and dropped rpm's. But, I had 2:73 gears also. I also, allways sprayed through the shifts, lucked out no problems.

Just got my tranny rebuilt because of spray in OD. 4L60E's have problems with the solenoids and servo's arent that hard. Anyways I wouldnt recommend it. Eventually anything fails.

old thread...

anyone try this recently?
i fried my 3-4 clutches simply going into 4th during WOT a few times (off the spray).
i've since had the tranny rebuilt with z-pack and a few other upgrades.
would it be insane to spray (not through shifts) in overdrive with 125shot, 20 degrees of timing and 91 octane?

i did it before with a 75 shot in my v6 with 3.42, but i know my bottle pressure dropped quite a bit and the car wouldn't push past 135mph (top was down - lost to a carerra by about 3 lengths).

but now i have a 125 shot with a nano kit (no pressure drop) on my ls1 with 3.23.
