no, it just ensures that nitrous is sitting right at the solenoid and there is no air trapped in the line - if you're counting every hundredth of a second in the 1/4, then you should have one - i personally can't really tell too much of a difference from when i purge and when i don't purge - then again, i don't have timeslips without purging to back this either

get one, they are cheap, dont hurt to have since they do make sure that u have a fresh stream of nitrous at the motor. plus they look hella cool

I recommend not getting a purge. It is completely unneccessary and many think it looks rediculous.
It is very easy to purge any system without any of the extra "purge" equipment. That stuff is just for show.

My vote would be to get one. While you don't NEED one, they are handy for purging the line and getting all the nitrous out of the main feed line when you close your bottle valve.

The purge serves two other puposes that just making a cool show.

First you use it to purge the air out of your nitrous line. This will give you a better hit and inmprove your 60 ffoot time.

Second.
It is used to bleed down bottle pressure. If you turn your system on and you have to much bottle pressure you can purge it down.
