It sounds like a hardware conflict in windows. Are you getting any errors in windows? I assume your pc is not recognizing the maximizer II when you plug it into the USB port?

What exactly is the problem? Word-for-word error message that you're getting on your laptop? Did you hook up the LED? If so, when you arm your Maximizer, does your LED flash once every second? (If it's brand new it should) The first time I tried using my Maximizer I had a comm error, for which there is a setting, and it had to be plugged into my laptop BEFORE I started it (the laptop) up. We're going to need a lot more details before we can give a concrete solution.

What kind of laptop. My Dell had an issue with my Alltronics EGT datalogger that took me some time to figure out. I had to uninstall some damn thing and then install something else that was on the Alltronics CD. Once i did that everything was ok.

However the same Dell had no problems with the NX dual stage controller.

Does your laptop have a USB input or are you using a serial to USB adapter? The adapters can be problematic, as I have had this issue, but sorted it out.

I've really good luck with "picky" serial devices with a Prolific USB<-->Serial. Seems this one does hardware handshaking pretty darned well, where others have the timing slightly off. Prolific makes the controller IC, but I don't think they directly market the converter. Best bet is to plug it in and look at the USB device list for the name. I bought my converter from Best Buy I think.

I also use FTDI (ftdichip.com) stuff, but only in devices that don't require strict hardware handshaking.
