Default Do widebands replace the need for a dyno tune?

More Noob questions from me, lol. I am just confused by the whole wideband thing...

Also, b/c I have a warranty on my car I want an N20 system that can be removed without too much hassle. Are these permanent type installs?

Depends on the person. Some like to start safer when dealing with the unknown, where a Dyno can come in helpful. I personally use a WB and real load, although it can be difficult soemtimes. When doing the fine tuning, like dialing in VE, MAF etc, unless your using a stepped load bearing dyno with a program to hold each cell at given rpm, then dyno is useless.

For tuning a Eddy Dyno sure has it's advantages. the wideband dosn't have to be a perment install. So it caould be taken out if it had to be. If you are going to be using it to check A/F when you spray it might be a little hard to do that and drive at the same time, so if possiable do it on a dyno first.

Thanks guys, but I am not altogether following what you are saying

For starters whats an Eddy Dyno? And if the car is setup and tuned properly from the start why would I need to continue to monitor it with a Wideband? Still trying to figure this all out, lol.

an Eddy Dyno is a chassis dyno (what u strap ur car down to see what the rear wheel hp is). really if it's tune correctly ON THE DYNO adjusting the VE table, MAF and whatever else then NO u do not really need to keep an eye on the wideband UNLESS u either change the jets for the nitrous OR somehing goes wrong with ur setup...like spark pugs, fuel delivery or whatever else. now, it's a lil hard to watch ur wideband while ur tuning on the street going down the track. if u do get a wideband in ur car then I suggest the LC-1 setup, it records ur A/F while ur WOT. this is good if for some reason ur A/F is a lil off for some reason, if it's way off then u'll know by possibly something letting go.

IMO if ur gonna go with a small shot (125 or less on a stock motor) then u'll be fine not taking it to a dyno unless u just wanna know what the HP is and to get the optimum tune possible.

An Eddy dynos has an Eddy Brake, so you can run constant speed, constant load, ramp, step & sweep tests on them, aiding in the tuning process. A lot of chassis dynos are inertia only; they don't have an Eddy Brake on them. Think of them as one or two free spinning rollers, good for calculating HP/TQ and tuning A/F @ WOT, but useless for any part throttle tuning.

You wouldn't have to keep monitoring A/F with a wideband after a tune, but some guys like to. Just another tool that can be used. Like Screamin_Z said, A/F shouldn't change unless something fails.

Well I am trying to buy all safety precaution parts in case something goes wrong including the new Dynotune air/fuel switch which i think shuts the N20 off if the A/F ratio goes ascew, doesn't it? So I would think I would be safeguarded without the use of a wideband, no?

Matt, do you guys use an Eddy dyno?

I use a wideband, PLX Devices M-300, to tune my car. Right now that being my mustang, T/A getting nitorus soon. Anyway the principles are the same, with a wet kit, wideband, and some jets you can tune the car in wherever you want. It's not hard reading the w/b while testing. I've had excellent results this way, ran over 200 bottles through engine w/out ever having a backfire, burnt plug, etc. Maybe a dry kit would require pcm tuning, but a wet kit is user friendly.
