Default How to tell if high mileage motor/tranny is healthy enough for spray?

I'm thinking about possibly getting a higher mileage lsx fbody and putting bolt ons, cam and spray. How can I tell the motor/tranny are good candidates for a 100-150 shot of spray on top of that aside from hearing from the owner "I have not raced it, and have changed the oil with synthetics every 2000 miles"?

compression test for sure. maybe put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the engine and check pressure(kinda a pita since its beind the manifold, although, i think there is a way to check it at the filter boss also)

Hit it with a big shot and see if it holds!

OK, serious answer: echo the guys who already said compression and leakdown tests.

Leak down test should deffinatly be done. It also wouldn't hurt to send the engine and tranny oil out for analysis to see if any red flags get thrown up.

You'll want to change the fuel filter, clean the injectors, and then get a fuel pressure gauge on the car and see where your at.

I was wondering - how, where and how long would the engine / tranny oil analysis be done? Could it be done right at the shop that is changing it all?

Cylinder leak down is the best route to go.As for the tranny its a roll of the dice.I really don't know how you would be able to know if the tranny would hold up.

No you have to take a sample (few ounces in a bottle) and send it out to a lab. I use Blackstone Laboratories. You can do a google search for them. They will send you everything you need to take a sample and ship it to them. It's $20 a sample, if you give them an email address you will usually get your results in less than a week. Along with the analysis they will give you a brief overview of your results and suggest to you how the motor is doing. If you send in the tranny fluid too, they should be able to tell you if they see excess band wear, or if the tranny has been abused and seen alot of heat.

Here's a recent report of mine to give you an idea of what they look like, http://nitrousfedmuscle.com/images/oil_analysis.JPG .
