Default Question about N20 bottles

This may be a stupid question...I dunno. But I'm really curious - has anyone ever heard of an N20 bottle rupturing/exploding inside a parked car because it got too hot? You know, summertime, direct sunlight...like a soda can or something.

I assume you mean N2O. We don't use NO2. But yeah the rupture disc is there to prevent that from happening.

Yeah, meant N2O. My bad.

And thanks. That was just bugging me, I don't know too much about nitrous systems.

I also hear way more horror stories about nitrous than anything - makes me question its practical use. =P

you mean like this:

I heard that the guy had "modified" his overpressure burst disks
and left the bottle heater on with the car parked (so he overpressurized the bottle)

Yup. Only thing that saddens me is that somebody that stupid wasn't sterilized in the process to prevent pollution of the gene pool. Never, never mess with a safety relief device.

Yeah, all compressed/liquified gases will have a pressure relief disk or valve on them, based on the specifications of the bottle and the gas contained within. I think the nitrous bottles we have are 1500psi. That being the case, I have no idea why that Maxima idiot would double the burst disks. Its not like he needs over 1500psi bottle pressure, I don't even think any noids commonly used could open at much higher than that.

I believe its well into the 2000 range before the disc will rupture.

Its 3000psi for nitrous and the bottles are rated to 3 times the working pressure which is 1800psi I belive. There is a small side story to that picture. The police officer that was investigating the case called NOS because they were the largest nitrous company. He wanted to know what could cause this and why there were no scorch marks from an explosion of this size. Apparently there was suspicion that he was trying to kill his wife. Not sure what ended up happening in that case but I always thought it was an interesting side story to the picture.
