Hey can someone explain something for me?

So in the thread that mike started called "finally"
There is a picture of a camaro going 10.001 @ 144
With 801hp. So how can a car with 300 more hp only go 1 second quicker then mikes 495hp runnin almost 10's. I know he's faster then mike by like 20mph but still 300 more horse power??

Im sure Mike can explanin it way better but I always thought the higher you go in hp the less difference there is for example the difference between 400 to 600 would be about equal to 600-900 if that makes sense lol. I think nitrous works the same way too. Anyone else know?

Phil has it down pretty close. As always the numbers will vary but the faster you go, the more hp it takes to get that little bit more. For example:

A 14.0 car increases hp by 50 hp and now goes 13.6
The same car many years later and upgrades is now running 11.0 and increases hp by 50 hp again and only picks up to 10.9

These numbers are completely random, but just trying to show the difference. Another factor is suspension set up. You can make all the power in the world, but if you can't get it to stick to the ground, you are still slow. Also weight is key as well. My dragster only made around 350 hp but yet it runs low 9's because it is soo much lighter. I know Mike has also done a lot of weight reduction this off season, don't know anything about this other car.

Phil and Rockn pretty much got it. I am sure there is some engineer who could give a disrotation on the mathmatical priciples of it though..lol

You guys pretty much got it covered.

Here is Ryan's sig: Best ET: 9.87 @ 144.XXMPH (1.712 60')

That 60' time should explain alot. Usually guys that are in the high 9's are cutting at least 1.4x 60' times and trapping closer to mid/high 130's. Just goes to show that traction is way more important to cutting good et's than hp is. It's definintely not a linear equation for ET to hp ratio because there's too many other factors.

Also, there is alot of frictional forces at work, including wind drag etc. The faster you go in mph, the more power it requires to get there and again, it's not a linear equation. A good example of this is top speed competitions. A typical 400hp car with good aerodynamics can go 165mph. But, to get that extra 35 mph and crest 200mph you're going to need good aerodynamics along with about 650+ hp.

Zmax Dragway in Charlette, North Carolina was recently built as a state of the art drag race facility (2 years old) and is 4 lanes wide. The pro drag racers raced 4 wide this last March there and NHRA plans on running it 4 wide again next spring. The owner of the track also owns the track in Vegas and was toying with the idea of adding 2 more lanes to Vegas. It was cool to watch for the first time, but alot of the pros didn't care for it and many fans didn't either (too much going on to see it all). In Funny Car they had two of the 4 backfire the supercharges in the same run. That was crazy to see.

I love zmax always get goosebumps when I watch the nhra run there one time a year! The bad is there is always a ton of confusion with all the drivers and the lights lol, but it is my favorite track for sure!!
