Cool spectre. Those are cool little cars for a grocery getter. The rod actually isn't bent, not sure why it seemed like it was. Took it to a different shop to check it out.

Hey guys I'm working on an LQ4 iron block and my game plan is to use an LS3 intake and heads. From what I've read the compression will only be ~9.6:1. The motor has 170K miles on it and I've not taken the stock heads off yet but inside the valve covers looks good as does the oil in the pan. If I don't see anything horrible when I pull the heads does it make sense to swap the pistons out or bore it to a 408? What would you guys do? Its going in my El Camino eventually. Feel free to give any advice on this combo I'm not as familiar with LSxs as I am with older SBCs.

I don't have a hard budget at this time, but I have some rough numbers. the problem is I have to redo or replace so much to make this all work. I need to redo the power train to really have a good car with this engine.
I want to get a trans and rear end because I don't like not having OD with my Turbo350 and my 7.5" 10-bolt is a joke. I was thinking I'd like to get a new rear for around a grand (9" or 12bolt) and a 4l80 trans for around two grand (not sure if thats possible)...That leaves the fuel system and the engine. I think I can do the fuel system for around 400 (new tank/sender with walbro pump plus fittings/lines) and the engine I have no idea on.
I want to have a pretty fast car, and I'd like it to still be streetable. If I can get this engine to near 400-450hp N/A I'd be happy.
Is that even possible with an LS3 top end and cam on this? or am I hoping for too much.

Wow lol that's a lot of work... hp wise, If you're talking about the motor puttin out that much yeah. To the wheels, with H/C/I and TB I would think you should be around there and that's of course PnP heads.
If you find a 9" for a grand let me know.![Happy](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_stretch.gif)

T$ - Remember she is doing this in the El Camino. Most likely leaf spring suspension not coils, no ABS, etc. It is comparing apples to oranges. I've seen in the drag racing community people putting 9" in older leaf spring cars for around $1200. Just saying it is possible, just alot of ground pounding/work for that cheap.

Yeah 9" are cheap, getting a 9" to fit our cars that is a different story. You can pick up a junkyard 9" for a couple hundred bucks but it will probably be an open diff with undesirable gears. Head, I would keep the stock crank or atleast a stock size crank. The 408 is nice but I think a 370 would have a much longer life. So yes do the pistons .030" over but no don't stroke it. That's just what I would do.

Well its good to know I'm not trying to do the impossible with the engine, now I just have to find the parts and a place to do the swap

Crank and rods will be fine. pistons will be fine as well, if your worried about the compression, you can always mill the heads.ptv is fine as long as your not running a huge cam.
Id at least to bearings and rod bolts at the minium. Hell I would do that even the engine only had 100k on it since you dont know the condition and its out of the car already. why roll the dice and have to pull it out months later?
yes the ls3 heads will fit on a lq4/lq9. Im running them on my lq9 427 stroker.
btw, it would probably be alot easier if you switched to a carb setup.

technically 425.6
copied from AES
6.0 engine block, machined to blueprint specification,
line honed, bored, decked .010", tq plate honed, Crankshaft digitally balanced
CP Piston set 2618 forged -11cc
NPR Nitrided steel top ring, napier 2nd ring, standard tension oil ring
Callies Compstar Crankshaft 4.100"
Scat 6.125" 4340 forged connecting rods, ARP rod bolts
King XP tri metal bearings
Durabond Cam bearing
I upgraded to the manley h-lite rods and manley crank and had them spec a cam for me.

I wouldn't have gone with such a long stroke, it makes the piston drop to low below the bottom of the cylinder. After pulling my last 408 apart I can see where the wear marks were. Also I don't think this really matters much but the piston wrist pin goes above the top ringland or the ringland goes below the wrist pin which ever way you look at it.

I second what Brandon said about the long stroke on a 6.0 block. Every 4.1 stroke I've seen /heard about has scuffing/oil control issues early in its lifespan. Hopefully Spectres will hold up though.
