Default Well, I asked this question in the...

Engine section and got smartassed remarks so I'll ask my buds here. After I ran the Cobra Saturday she started ticking up top.

1) On cold starts she ticks up top in the passenger banks.

2) It clears after some warmup when revved to around 3K.

3) It taps intermittently afterwards.

4) ZZ502, Alum roller rockers (Blue), aftermarket roller cam of unknown lift and unknown lifters.

5) The rockers seem tight and one transmitted some tap back to my rachet handle when it was pressed on while running at idle.

Any ideas? How much could this hurt the motor if run again? It's been a long time since I had a BBC to play with.

I thought you got rid of the Cobra? What are you talking about? Did you put a Chevy motor in a Cobra?

I think he meant that he raced a Cobra...isn't that 5xx in a Chevelle or similar?

Are you sure? Maybe he meant to type raced "a" cobra.

Yes, in the Chevelle and yes I ate up a Cobra. The cam is a roller, the roller rockers are aluminum, blue and look like Lunati's and I don't have a clue what lifters are in there. Oh, I believe the cam is hydraulic.

Assuming it is a hydraulic cam, it sounds like you just need to adjust the rockers a little then. Once it warms up, stuff expands, and that may be why it goes away after awhile.

On a sbc, you simple back off the nut, then tighten it down until the ticking goes away, then I turn an additional 3/4 turn (I've heard from 1/2 to 1 turn)

Pretty simple, but messy (if you have an old set of valve covers cut the top off them and put them on, it will keep a lot of the mess down.

Sounds like 1 of the rockers needs some love. How nbad it could be depends on many things like people are asking. Solid, hydraulic, rev limit, etc. If it was an LS1 it would be "normal"......

I usedd to set my BBC hyd lifters by adjusting them up til they make noise, back down til they're quiet, then 1/4 to 1/2 turn tighter. Worked well to 7500 rpm.

I always adjust mine on the back side of the cam (No mess that way). Tighten to zero lash and then an extra 1/2 turn. Some noise is normal for roller rockers. There will be a lot of noise if you only tighten 1/2 turn like I do. Good luck, Charlie.
