How hot is too hot for an A4?
And how cool is too cool?
My goal is to keep the tranny below 175*
My wimpy cooler is not cutting it. Man that stall converter gets the tranny hot right quick sitting in traffic.
I just ordered this one. I hope it does the job.

It should work. I might have to remove the SLP CIA duct work to install it but such is life. Better that then a new tranny.

They say any temperature < 200F will help extend transmission life. Mine stays pretty near 150F day to day then I've seen as high as 190F at the track. I run a pretty big cooler in series with the stock cooler. Stock cooler first, then the aftermarket cooler second. I actually have a trans temp gage on the dash so I can see whats going on.

150* would be sweet. Mine got up to around 170* last night just putting around town. I can imagine that would skyrocket sitting in the staging lanes in the middle of summer.
I ran my plumbing the same way as yours. I wonder how much actual cooling is taking place in the stocker with a water temp of 195*
How big is your cooler? The one I just bought is 15x10x3.

I have my 24k B&M piped like you & Ryan, after the rad cooler, and mine stays at or under 150 for normal driving. Obviously sitting in traffic with no air movement it gets hotter. On the highway it stays very cool, like 125, but that is locked up with lots of air. And at the track mine will hit 180+. Stalling it at the line makes the temps climb rapidly.....

as long is it is not over 200* I would not worry. I check mine with a surface gauge at the cooler. I get a 20-40* drop on it that was with my small one I used to run
If your temps are to high some thing is making more heat then it should . then again your converter is pretty loose and that makes heat. In town will be the hottest
Imagine how hot the fluid gets if you make an entire pass in third gear

It only gets hot sitting in traffic. Sitting at a 4 way stop with 15 people in front of me I watched it climb 40 degrees. I think the fan on the cooler will take care of that problem. It does the same thing slogging along in rush hour below the lock up mph.
Cruising down the freeway it runs nice and cool and the temp actually drops down to well below 150*.
I bet that 3rd gear pass heated it up real nice! Why don't ya have a tranny temp guage?

I run the B&M 24K but I bypassed the rad cooler. It gets hot as hell in the summer here in Arkansas.....100's with 80%+ humidity. In the hottest weather, my gauge showed 180 while cruising and 210 was the hottest I saw in stop and go. Now that it has cooled down, I see 125-150 cruising and 150-180 in traffic. I took my measurement from the the line going to the cooler before it gets to the cooler. That location should be the hottest the fluid ever gets. I thought about putting another gauge in with the sending unit right behind the cooler to see what the difference is before and after, but I ended up getting a water temp gauge instead. That is pretty surprising how much difference there is between actual water temp and the dummy gauge that always reads 210. It stays around 190 most of the time. If I don't get back to Washington this winter (cross your fingers everyone!!) I might run a second cooler in the summer to keep the tranny temp below 200.
