Default Washington Emissions?

I ended up being economical and buying a cheap truck, but want to bust back into the sports car world soon, but I was wondering how WA does emissions? I haven't had to do it on my truck. Do they actually put the car on rollers and check the emissions or is it just an obdII scan or what? How radical can you get with your exhaust and cam setups and still pass up in this **** hole?

It's not required in every county. Not exactly sure but, I've heard it's a scan only for the counties that require it.

Yeah obd II cars it's just a scan... Once I get some spare time and money for gas or what not I gotta have ellis check my tune to make sure I'm not throwing any unnecessary codes.

no visual inspection, atleast in Clark county... They just shove tongs up exhaust and also check for any thrown codes, thats about it.

What year was your cheap truck made? WA emissions require the testing of vehicles more than 5 but less than 25 years old. There are two different types of test: A scan for OBD II, or an exhaust check for the others. Within certain counties, emissions requirements are divided based on population, by zip code. Choose residence carefully.

The way I understand it is that if it's 96 and new car, obdii all they do is pull codes and check your gas cap. No codes, good cap = pass.

Also your computer must have passed the "readiness" status. In other words if you had just cleared the codes and took it straight to testing they'll tell you to come back after putting some miles on it to set the readiness stuff.

I passed with a blown 402, obvioulsy cam & headers etc. And I had "Incomplete" status on the rear O2 heaters (I use sims). But some places will fail you for that....

What do they do up in WA if you have a swapped motor, say an OBDII engine in an OBD1 car? I assume its still just and OBDI test right?

Then they don't care about a CEL, they sniff you and if you pass the sniffer you get your tags.

So tj, I am guessing washington has similar levles for HC and what not. How big of a cam could you pass in a 5.3, still about a 224/224?

I can vouch for that readiness thing. I had a code in memory, and cleared it waiting in line at the emission station, thinking I was a smart guy! It's so easy on the C5, using the dash controls. They didn't get the status they needed and told me to go drive it around and come back. I passed the next day.

Get this, my 2003 H2 got the sniffer test as opposed to scanning the OBDII codes. The reason they told me it's because the weight of H2 puts it into another class that requires sniffage. I believe its for anything over 6000lbs and the H2 is like 6500.

Piece of cake! I passed with a 234/234 but it took some creative tuning and fuel mixture!
