Yeah probably cheaper I'm just guessing cause it's still the same amount of work, don't know how much the materials would cost, just going by what a normal color change cost at the shop I work at would charge,if you do it yourself, maybe 1000 to 1500 in materials(sandpaper, paper, plastic, filler, primer, sealer, then paint). If it's not your DD do one panel at a time then paint,of course you need the body tools if you or a buddy doesn't have any,if you've only got a few small dings it won't b hard to fix, you'll learn something and know that you did it,study up on how to do it n do it,nothing like making you ride yours n doing it yourself IMO,either way good luck

6-10k???If your car is a keeper (show or garage queen) I can understand a GREAT paint job like that... if you Drive that thing... Take that bitch to Maaco and walk about about $900 light in the wallet and with maybe a run or two that only you will notice... just my 2 cents...

It depends if you want a basecoat/clearcoat job or cheap single stage, there are many companies producing flat/satin clearcoat, price varies from $120 a kit to well over $400,the base color also can vary in price depending on brand . If you're on a budget,I'm sure you can find a local shop to shoot it for you in cheap single stage Hot Rod Black for around 2k

LOL, damn $2k, even that sounds excessive for satin black to me. I had a body shop locally quote me $600 to shoot mine jambs included in Hot Rod black. If your stock paint is still in good condition hit it with some 320 all over, sealer & then your single stage satin black. Unless your wanting a bc/cc satin job with satin clear.
Just b/c its a color change doesnt mean its gotta cost a arm & leg. Just depends on exactly what kind of paint job & what paint system your wanting.

a guy on here did it himself for $157 or something and it looked pretty good from the pictures. i'm not a fan of flat black on these cars but it looked great for the price.

I've done this on a '69 Camaro that you can see a few pictures of in my sig. You can buy some single stage urethane in satin black for much much less than a base/clear setup. Of course if you're paying someone to do it, it requires a lot of disassembly and taping not to mention surface prep. My advice is tackle it yourself. Satin black is very forgiving as far as showing flaws. It would be a great way to learn.

Flat black, if done the right way, uses a black base, then a special clear that gives it that satin look. If you just use flat black, you will be repainting it from time to time due to sun damage, eviroment polution, weather elements, etc. also if not done right you will se streaks when it starts to fade.

Yeah. Around here you'd be looking at around $2500 on the lower end up to about $4000 for a big name shop to spray it. Unless you went to Earl Scheib or Maaco... which I would rather have 11 year old paint. lol
