exactly what paint was used? it seems like there was still something on the wheel that made it not bond... id strip it back down, chemical or sand, and scuff it more with steel wool / green scuff pad / sandpaper and use dish soap to clean. id also recommend those tack cloths, usually small square yellow things right before you spray. ive had great luck with the black epoxy for appliances in a rattlecan, i use it on anything now...

The problem is the prep to the rims before the paint you have to sand or scuff the shine off the old finish so the new paint can stick also the time between coats is to long 10 min or so is what you need to do

What is going on in the photo is the first coat of paint lifted off of the original finish on the rim

use a red scuff pad and wash and dry before paint also look in to using an adhesion promoter

Wow that sucks.

I've painted many rims in my day. I'd say there was still residue in that area. Even if you couldn't see it - looks like it was there.

Prep is a bitch. It takes a long time, requires careful work - and mistakes can happen even when you are watching for them.

Good luck with the repair. Lets see pics when you're done!

I see two problems here. 1: the rims weren't prepped quite well enough and "yesterdays" coat didn't stick well enough. I agree on using an adhesion promoter. 2: You applied a second coat WAAAYYY outside the recommended "second coat" time. Most paints should get the next coat less than an hour after the last one but after the last coat has flashed, usually 15 minutes. So, after you clean all that mess off, re-prep the wheels and apply an adhesion promoter and allow it to dry. then apply your coats of paint waiting at least 15 minutes but not more than an hour between coats. If using a clear, make sure it is the same brand and/or same kind of paint and use the same times for applying it after the last coat of paint and between it's coats.

wash, sand 320-400 grit or scotch brite pad, blow off dust, degrease with a wax and adhesive remover, i prefer priming a bare metal but on painted finish then you do 3 or 4 light coats, never load it up.

This wheel looks like it wasn't completely degreased or sanded at all.

We all start somewhere, don't feel bad, now you know!

You can do some near show quality finishes in small formats with rattle can paint with the right prep.
