Default rant about t/a taillights

WHY WHY WHY... is it that every time i buy a 4th gen f-body is one taillight always darker than the other like someone has put tint on it. i've had multiple f-bodies and i can never get 2 taillights that are the same shade and it kinda pisses me off. can anybody explain this to me? am i just buying t/a's with replaced taillights or is this oem?

I was curious about the same thing a long time ago, answer that I was given on this site was "moisture leaking into the light which damages the chrome reflector inside."

Makes sense since these already are getting older so it's inevitable for things like that.

Have a similar problem with LS1 Camaro taillights always being slightly cracked or something on the reverse light portion of the lights.

The reflective material inside of the light housing corrodes easily, and eventually gives a darker appearance. I had this dilema on my car as well...the left side was dark, and the right side was much lighter. I posted up in the classifieds to see if someone would be interested in trading a "light" passenger side housing for a "dark" one, and ended up finding someone who was interested. It worked out well for both of us...he got a good passenger side housing to match his driver's side, and I ended up with a good "dark" housing that matched my driver's side housing perfectly.

Just an option to keep in mind...see if someone wants to trade.

I bought new taillights about a year ago and after water and moisture got into the passenger side it turned "dark" also. I'll just end up buying a new one

I always notice it on the trans am as well. I have even seen a few that look like they have mold on one side.

Its really noticeable at night when cruising out on Woodward.

One of mine is mint. The other would be mint if it wasn't for the very edges on 2 areas starting to de-laminate. It's really small and no one notices but me. They are the same shade and very vivid/crisp. At least I have that going!

X2. This should be called the free tint mod!

My driver side is way darker than the passenger side and I was thinking of trading for another dark one but i might just wait until the passenger side tail goes dark too. Guess I'll see how much it ends up bothering me.

Don't drill rain holes. That just lets moisture in. Wanna prevent the problem? Put black silicone all around the edges of the light where the reflector is glued to the lens, and make sure the gasket between the bulb sockets and the reflector is good.

Also, your passenger taillight looks like it MIGHT be starting to have the issue... Just slightly. It could also be the lighting too.
