77 shaker on 2000 T/A
I decided the car needed a little more going on up front. It has the nice big wing in the back, so it needed a little more in front. After looking around I figured my easy options were a ram air hood(Just don't like them. No offense guys, just not for me). Or a firehawk hood. But those go for around 2k. So I thought about it for a while and ordered a shaker insert from a 1977 T/A. Something like this:
Yea that'll work.
Just drill the rivets and remove the metal backing. Cut off all the unnecessary material and primer and I get this:
Now to the "hard" part. I decided it would be easiest to mount from the bottom, and also sort of fake the shaker look. Made a cardboard template for the hole that needs to be cut. Checked and rechecked it. Now to cut a big hole in a perfectly good hood.
Again, checked and rechecked for straightness in all aspects.
A little bit of careful work with a cutting wheel and an air saw and we have this. I don't plan on painting the car for at least a few weeks so I wanted it to look good without finishing. Time to mount this thing.
Had to do some more careful cutting on the hood reinforcements. Used automix panel bonding adhesive to attach from bottom.
Looks good to me. Bake it for a while to speed cure time and throw it on the car.
Yea I definitely like it. Might shoot a coat of black on the shaker for now. I think it's going to look pretty damn good when it's all done. What do you guys think? Ever seen this done before? I looked a little but didn't find another one.

I had a '77 T/A for many years, so your topic brings back a lot of memories. I made my OE scoop functional, by cutting out the "louvers" on the back, and gluing in some metal screen from the back side. Since the car had a carb rather than fuel injection, this was a functional mod.
If you want the scoop a different color, let me suggest this...The original second-gen T/As were either blue, with a somewhat narrow white stripe up the hood and down the trunk lid, or white with blue striping. The stripe was maybe 4" wider than the scoop, 2" on each side. Doing this on your car could be a cool, retro theme....

Pretty cool but a true "shaker" would be a little cooler...

As much as I like that it's something different, and I get what you're trying to do, it just looks like if someone slapped on a different kind of hood scoop instead of the usual autozone one on their civic.
Good quality work though.

I assure you it's not crooked. I'm a bit obsessive about measurements. I painted it satin black for now, and it looks a lot better. When I actually paint the car I'm having some decals cut for the shaker. Probably "5.7 LS1". Should help it look more OEM. I love it, but probably just cause I was so tired of that boring hood and don't have the funds for anything else decent.

Nice work. The decals will really help. Do your own thing, some will approve, some will hate, as long as you like what you see, it rocks! I had similar reasoning when I did mine, though I like the WS6 look, there are just too many around to really stand out, and I cut my teeth looking over the dash as shakers. I couldn't be happier with mine, and with 6LE's airbox, it is fully functional. I also installed a functional flap, so it really has the 2nd gen appeal.

Looks good.Maybe it would be cool to get the bird that was on the hood of the 2nd gen T/As scaled down and use that as a decal for the shaker? I think it would look pretty good. I'm doing this for me GTO and I borrowed the shaker from a '77 as well. As soon as we get the first snow here or first bad freeze my goat will be put away which is when my shaker build will begin. Mine will be fully functional though. Should be pretty neat when it's finished. Throw up some pics with the shaker painted.

I don't think he means "crooked"....It appears that the scoop slants somewhat forward, but in all reality, it more or less has to, to follow the contour of the hood. The 2nd gen cars, which these scoops were OE on, had a much flatter hood, so the visual effect was much different.
How about "T/A 5.7" ?

The car in that pic looks awful familiar I'm going to put the hood and Shaker up for sale once my new hood from VFN arrives. Perhaps someone else would be interested in a low cost alternative to freshen up the front of their T/A.

I think if it sat a bit lower and if it wasn't as angled downward (or upward) it would look nice. Maybe you could set it up in a way that made it look a little more functional...ie put a little bit of a gap between the hood and the scoop. Also, a stripe will work wonders, like the others in the thread.
Edit, I did a few crude photoshops for you...
