wax job gone bad!
I picked up my new spare work car. Clean car for how old she is. It's a 1990 Geo Prizm. Brown in color. From a distance the paint looks great but the closer you get to the car the more you can see where someone tried to do a wax job and it didn't remove the wax properly. I can see wax here and there in white patches. Looks like it's been sitting for a while on the paint. I tried to use some dawn soap today. I didn't really make any progress. Anybody have any ideas or advice? Thanks

Sounds like this car needs at least a 2 step paint correction via a dual action polisher. I bet the spider webbing and marring in the paint is really bad. Only way to fix that is through a detailed paint correction. You can refer to this thread I made for better details on how to go about doing it, and what the end product will look like.

Could be wax. In 1994 my black TA got that same look from me over applying the wax over a several applications. And I couldn't get that stuff off with my limited tools/knowledge. I took it to a few dealers and they all said it was acid rain damage where the paint needed to be redone. I took it to a detailer as a last resort. They knew immediately what the problem was. For $125 he removed all the old wax and fully detailed the car inside and out, engine bay and trunk included. Made the car look new again....$125. Beat the cost of new paint.

Would post pics but it's more to it than copy and paste. I'm sure iit's not the clearcoat cause it doest have any peeling spots at all. Car is brown but it looks cloudy when you get right up on it but from 10-20 feet away you can't notice it. Why I think it's wax is because it's not all over. Look like someone tried waxing the car and didn't remove the wax in certain sppts. It's glossy brown on the trunk/ quarter panel but have cloudy whitish swirls marks on the hood and doors.

Body and paint shops around here start at $400+ just to do any paint work to any single panel on a car. $180 to fix paint professionally around here? In my dreams.

Sometimes, paint correction won't work. If the defects are past the clear-coat and into the paint, then the only way to fix that is with a re-paint. 9 times out of 10 the defects are in the clear and can be buffed out. Swirl marks, spider webbing, and marring are the most noticable. Some believe their paint is great, but after stripping the paint with Dawn and putting the clay bar to it, you get a clear picture of the true condition of the paint. I love bringing paint back to life. My buddy couldn't believe that was his truck when he saw it. I was able to remove every defect in the clear. Only things I weren't able to remove were the deep scratches on near the bed rails due to his belt buckle. Those were deep into the paint though.
