My '98 is a 3/98 built car, making it just a few months shy of 10 years old. There is not a single bubble or wave anywhere in the roof paint. The car is garage kept under a cover most of the time as it is a show car, but when I do take the car out it's usually a hot, sunny summer day with hot temps. It often sits in full sun for 6-8 hours at car show events, etc., so it's seen plenty of hot days in the sun. But still no bubbles. If it hasn't happened in 10 years, I doubt it's going to happen ever.
On the other side of things, my '02 does have the issue. It's only got one small wavy section and two small bubbles that haven't burst yet. Since the '02 is just a driver I don't intend to fix this until/unless it gets really bad.
There's an '02 SS hardtop that I've had my eye on buying, but this issue is one of the reasons I don't want to buy the car. Being an '02, it's almost a certainty that it'll eventually have this problem, and I'd hate to deal with trying to make the car perfect again after a repair like this considering it's a 5k mile show car.
Stupid glue. Seems like GM got cheaper and cheaper as the model years worn on with these cars. Since buying my '02, I've really gone over it from end to end comparaing all the little differences from my '98 to the '02, and I've found a bunch of little detail stuff that GM cheapened out on by '02. It's sad really.

I was wondering if they dealership would still fix this issue, the cars got less than 60k miles and is in excellent condition. If not, I bought the extended warrenty with my new SS that suppoedly covers everything but tires, breaks, and hoses. It should cover this roof problem correct?

I have never personally seen a '98 with this issue, and only a few people here have posted about having the issue with their '98. My guess is that the change-over in adhesive must've happened right at the end of the '98 model year and some late build date '98s got the newer, problematic '99+ glue.

Sticker on your driver's door jamb should tell this. Should be in MM/YY format (mine is 03/98).
I bet yours was a late '98 car. Like May, June, July of '98.

When I read stuff like this, I begin to wonder if GM was using multiple suppliers for the glue in later years. Maybe there was a slight difference in the strenght from one manufacturer to the next, resulting in some that never get the issue, no matter how much sun/heat they see, or how old they get.

I read in a mag, dont remember if it was GM or Pontiac Performance, that the issue could be fixed if a sealer was used in the process of prepping for paint. Is this true?

I'm getting mine looked at i'm so excited. It would be mint if not for this, and it's not my fault this problem is happening. Why should we be responsible for a defective product?

Someone should be contacting you this week. They probably will want to inspect it and then advise what we can do to help...

The people at GM are very nice, you just have to get past the local GM dealership clowns. Mine is completely unmodded and under 60k miles though as well as garage kept. Make sure they know this and about the issue, I had the tsb and freebie work 2001somws.6 had put on the page and sent it all in together. I doubt they'll take a look at higher mileage vehicles however. My 2000 just started showing the issue 8 years later because it was garage kept and so well maintained before I bought it.
