Default Is $500 a good price to paint a hood?

Local bodyshop quoted me $500 to paint and mount my VFN hood. I checked out a few of the cars that he has painted before and they match the rest of the car perfect. Is this a fair price? I'll have less than $600 in the hood itself!

I'd say that's a fair price if they guarantee their work.

Keep in mind that Body & Paint labor is around $40 to $50 per hour...so add it up. If it's $50 per hour....they are charging you for 10 hours of labor. That is VERY STEEP!!!

Unless...this will include all your paint material...which should only cost about $120...and that's me pricing you PPG DBC deltron....about the finest paint out there.

No, that seems a little high. About $350 should be about right.

I just called another local body shop and he told me he wouldn't touch anything fiberglass that wasn't OEM. To much work and still end up with a shitty product.

yea.. well with after market fiberglass you usually have alot of imperfections... and requires loads of body work.. so this guys you called isnt gonna paint it and have it all wavy and not straight looking because thats his reputation as a shop.... thats why he wont touch it...

This body shop must not know how good of quality products VFN produces.

I had a hood that required minor dent removal and original paint stripped. I have a friend who owns a body shop and he gave me a friend price of $450.

That's not a bad price if your friend had to remove all the paint, down to the original surface and then work the dent and repair it, and then paint the thing and clear it.

But simply painting a hood sure ain't gonna cost $500.

Whoever said they won't touch a fiberglass hood, has never bought a VFN hood. I have a VFN SS Camaro hood and it's of the finest quality. It's nothing like trying to paint on a Jui-Ling (Taiwan) panels.

Listen up guys...if I were doing the work this is how I'd charge it out.

Refinish & Clear Coat Hood Panel: 3.7 hours
Refinish Underside w/hinge: 1.0 hours
Total Refinish Time: 4.7 Hours @ $44.00 per hour
Total Charge: $206.80

Now that is straight labor, as if you brought me the hood and the paint.
My labor is quoted from my Mitchell Collision & Repair Manual.

Any questions?

I paid 200 for mine but it was not wet sanded to give it that mirror like finish plus they re-alligned the hood for me too.. so I say 300 is a good price if they wet sand it.. 500 is too much.

$500 isnt doing you a favor thats jsut how much it costs... theres labor time and materials involved.... you have to paint it twice becuase you have to cut in the underside too dont forget... double the paint time... and prep .... $200 to paint a brand new hood is either doing you a favor or shitty work... simple as that you can find shops to do stuff for cheap... but dont expect it to look 1/2 way decent... we are redoing an 87 vette for some guy that my boss knows and hes getting a freind of the BOSS discount and i think he is still charging him $2500 because of all the work that is involved in paint an body especially on fiberglass parts... this is just my 2 cents.. take it or leave it... hope it helps either way

+1 you need to go by and ask them how many hours it will take them and how much an hour it is
