I bought a mother's clay kit which came with detailing spray to be used to lubricate the clay. I heard you can use detergent or car wash instead and save the detailing spray. is this a good idea?

I use fresh car soap. I'll make up a small fresh bucket of car soap and start in one area and work my way around the car. And by any chance you get the clay on a dry spot of the car wd40 will take it off right away safe.

what kind did she use? I know a lot of people recommend using dawn to get all the old wax off.... maybe thats what happened and with no wax protection the sun bleached it?
