Ok, pissed.....
So....
I'm painting my LS6 intake a gloss black.
Been working on it for almost 2 weeks. Let my previous work cure since last weekend- which I had to stop at that point b/c when I started the first coat of clear, it turing an almost gray color.
I took the can (using Duplicolor 500 degree) back to the store and bought another. A week later, I sanded, re-blacked it and started my new clear again. SAME THING!
Am I screwed up here? Maybe applying too thick of a coat. I was trying to be careful and move quick. Now, I must also say, all the other duplicolor cans I have rattle. My clears have not. But I've shaken the hell outta them. Please help!

I think you need to wait longer... the black needs to fully dry. How long are you waiting between black and clear coats? I had the same probably when only allowing few hours to dry. Let it sit overnight drying the black, then spray the clear the next day. Thats my guess.... They are mixing...

Is your clear the same type of product as your color?? Like....Enamel on enamel.....or laquer on laquer? You don't want to use laquer clear over enamel color...........like I did my first time using rattle cans. That may be your problem.
Good luck!

Too many possibilities. Most rattle cans aren't labeled urethane, acrylic, or lacquer. If money isn't a problem you could powder coat it. Last longer and look great. Craftsman sells a gun and powder coat. Little over $200 new. You just need an oven ($50 craigslist lol).

Damn sorry man ya I dont know what I was reading but you can't powder coat your intake. You can try to bake it on though. Paint it and throw so high heat on it. I think some paints require 4 hours of baking.

It's finished....
Hey, thanks for all the feedback, Here's the follow up:
Got the intake done. The duplicolor clear apparently does not have a rattle in the can.
I think it was the humidity too. I took a break, let it cure for a day or so, then shot it again. It was laying down gray, but then would become transparent as it cured. It was the engine high temperature stuff, don't know it that plays a role in it.

I just went with a gloss black, b/c I'm planning on doing fuel rail covers color-matched red. Very pleased with the result! I've painted aircraft before, but nothin much like this (glossy).
