Were in the same boat but reversed here, we bought a very clean 98 T/A minus engine and trans, then we located a complete 02 engine, trans dropout and were working on it now. What we have on our car is 3 connectors under the dash on the 98 and the 02 engine pcm harness has only two plugs, I'm told it can be done but need to find out how. I'll be keeping a close eye on this hopefully we can both get it done...............Paul

I do know on the 98 models the ground wires are diffrent in the harness meaning if you plug a 2002 computer to a 98 harness it will fry the computer. I would keep it all matched up.

Cool

hey there, new to ls1tech, i know this thread is a little old, but im doing the same thing as you guys did. i have a 99 camaro body, and im using the complete drop out, wiring, dash and computer from the 98 i had. i figured it would be as simple (NOT!) as putting everything into the new body, but i cant even get the dash lights to light up let alone start! any help or info you guys can give me? i checked all of the simple stuff like fuses, relays, grounds, ect... but i just cannot figure this thing out! i also have two extra plugs under the dash, but i have no clue where they go. the fuel pump primes when i turn key to start position, but that's all ive got. thats one of the only electrical parts from the 99 and its the only thing that works!!! is there a shelf life on the engine computer or something? it was out of the car for about a year in a nice dry place... -bruno

I have done this several times. 98 is the only year that is not compatable with other years. You can use the engine and trans. but thats it. You need to use a 99+ body engine harness. Can the 98 stuff be re pinned to work in a 99+ yes but its much faster to swap harnesses. PM me with questions.

if your car is a 98 you can switch everything to the 99. you will have to change the oil sending unit tho cause they are different. just change it to a 99 sending unit.

What is the car in that pic..is that's what's left of the Camaro SS?

Is that what you are wanting to buy as a roller to build up into a LS1..?

If so then let that heap go to the Scrap Yard..that thing is fucked.

If you have a 1998 Engine you will have to change the Oil Sending Unit and the Temp Sensor aswell if you are wanting it to work with a 1999-02 Harness.

The best advice I can give anyone reading is stay as far away from a 98 ANYTHING as you can.

thats why im trying to get rid of the 98 brains

is there anything else besides the sending unit i'll need to change?

would it be easier to just reprogram my 98 computer after mods? i heard they try to reset themselves but if thats not so i'll just use my 98 pcm

also i have the stuff to re pin the 98 harness to fit the 99 computer but have no clue how to do it and dont wanna f stuff up, anyone know anybody around St. Louis that can do it? id much rather go that rout!!

Frost, why that hate for the 98? Honestly? pm me.
You can actually use a 98 harness and repin it to a 99 config. but to be 100% you should get a whole car harness and swap it all out. Cluster and all.
That is my next adventure a 99 rewire.

Just the Temp and Oil Sensors..eventually it will be more convienant to you when you replace the Heads to a center-bolt style.

The 1998 Engine will work fine, I would look for a 1999-up Wiring & PCM for it..easier to tune.

Frost same question. Why the dislike for the 98? I know there is fewer peramiters for tuning but it can be done just takes a little more time.

im having a similar problem i'm in the process of swapping a ls1 out of a 99 ta into a into a 98 firebird and was attempting to swap the entire harness from the 99 into the 98 so far i have the entire dash removed and was beginning to get things disconnected and noticed how many wires run down the sides of the car to the back that do not have plugs to disconect them, i was wondering if anyone has done this before and could possible give me some pointers on what has to be removed and the best way to do it.

thanks

You answered your own question. The VE table has fewer coordinates to tune with, the microprocessor is slower, it's just not as robust a platform as the '99+ PCM.

I'm assuming you have one and will now get all butt-hurt about it.

I am in the same boat here. I have everything from a 99 Trans AM and cut out a bunch of body harness stuff I needed. I found a 98 interior body harness thinking it would be the same. I turn the key and the only thinkg I get is the red security light the headlight switch working and the lights for the air switches. No gauge lights, no gauge movment, no crank nothing. What do I need to do to make this harness work? I have a real hard time reading the pinout charts.
Help would be greatly appreciated, I am so close to getting my project running. 78 corvette with the LS1 t-56

Ok 98 I have done so may 98 stuff I can pretty much help ya out.
If you have a 98 body car 98 harnesses you can repin the engine harness and use a 2002 pcm to control it.
IF you have a 99+ car with 99+ wiring harnesses you can use a 98 engine and just swap out the 98 specific sensors for the 99+ counter parts.

There are so many if and and's to go into details.

PLease feel free to PM with with any specific questions.

User-c3: Are the pinouts that you have for the connectors under the passenger's side firewall? (C210 and C220 I think, and one is white and the other is blue?)

I swapped a 98 LS1 into a 97 and had to do a good amount of rewiring under there and in the engine bay. I think those connecters under the passenger side are the culprit for what's foing on, especially since I had similar issues when I plugged my harneses together and tried to start the engine, lol.
