Default ASA cam tuning tips/hints?

Installing my ASA cam tomorrow and being fairly new to LS tuning, I was wondering if anyone could share some tips and tricks to get me started tuning for this cam? I already have a wideband installed and use EFI Live.

Specs:
LQ4 6.0, stock 317 heads
Long tubes/ORY
Ls6 intake/stock ported TB/stock 28lb injectors
GM ASA cam, 226/236 .525 110*

Thanks for any input!

The factory ASA tune files are here, with you having more cubic inches I don't know if they will help.

Brad, thanks a ton!! I was looking everywhere for that and just couldn't find it. That should be a great starting point to at least get me going!

Its alive! It needs a lot of tuning though... the 98 ASA file on TFD was junk, couldn't even get it to flash, was getting a checksum error. So I transferred most of the tables to my old tune, adjusted it for my stock injectors and it was WAAAAAY lean at idle and most driving... As in my wideband was pegged at 18. So I took a look at the 2000 ASA file and the tables looked a lot better and smoother, so I transferred most of those over, messed a bit with the injector timing to account for the overlap and it is idling better, right around stoich. Havent had a chance to drive it today, but Im sure as hell hoping its better than last night lol.

I'm confused. Can you explain where you are finding these "ASA" files?

TFD only has stock tunes. The modified tunes were removed a while back. I'm not aware of any factory GM vehicle with the ASA cam.

So the new tune didn't do much by way of driveablity... Still really sluggish throttle response, very jerky in lower/mid RPMs and cruising. Still lean up top but better than before, I didn't get on it hard but its at roughly 14.2 at WOT.

Not really sure where to start now, was hoping that these tunes would have at least given me a good base to start with.

You need to start tuning the MAF and/or VE tables to take into account the fueling needs of the engine. Do you have any logs you can post?

No logs yet, haven't driven it for more than 5 minutes. I have a 411 pcm just sitting here, I've been really considering doing the swap from the 98 so I can use the auto ve, which from what I've gathered, can't be used on the 98 pcm. Is it really worth doing the swap and the cost of the license, or should I stick with what I have for now?

If you can upgrade the computer I would do it.

On the drivability, add some to your desired airflow table and work with the throttle cracker/follower tables to smooth things out.

Small changes, log results, observe, repeat.

Good luck

Im gonna look into the PCM upgrade some more before I get too far into tuning it with the 98 PCM. Problem is I have no way to test the 411 I have, so if I go through all the trouble of swapping over and it doesn't work, Im gonna be pissed.

You can do auto ve on a 98.

Is there a reason you can't use EFI Live's calc.vet? It's the easiest way I've found and will take less time than you've already spent on your copy/paste sessions.

It uses one good long log to correct your MAF table and build a new VE table at the same time. If you get a good log and use correct filters it will get you nearly dead on and then you can fine tune from there.

When I first got EFI Live a year+ ago, I did a LOT of reading, and I could have sworn that I read calc.ve didn't work on the older PCM. So it does work? Time for some more reading then.

Also I wanted to ask, if Im basically starting from scratch, should I just start with a factory base tune and build off of that?

The Calc.VET procedure works on 1998... but you have to think about what you're doing (1998 has multiple VE tables; and 1998 does not log the pid GM.DYNAIRTMP_DMA, so you have to create a DAT pid from table B4901... the Calc.VET thread will guide you in all you need to do... it also tries to get you thinking about what is going on).

If you have a running tune then just build on that.
