Initial Start Tune on New engine + T56 Swap
Engine blew up and I wanted to wait to build it until I had a 6 speed.
Well now engine is built and the 6 speed is in. I have a build thread going if you want to check it out.
Engine:
243 Heads w/ yellow springs
Cam 226/230 .560/.545 112+2
7.4 hardened pushrods
ls2 timing chain
ls7 lifters
LS6 intake
3.902 Probe forged pistons
Melling 10295 oil pump
180deg thermostat
AC Delco 41-110 w/ MSD wires
Longtubes
Trans:
2001 fully rebuilt
GM slave
LS7 clutch & flywheel
GM pilot bearing
Pro 5.0 shifter
New oem master
My plan was to pluck a stock 2001 LS1 M6 tune from repository somewhere and slightly modify it for first start/break in. I have efi live v2.
I can't find the dang repository with the stock tunes in it, I probably am blind.
Someone suggested this modification to initial tune:
Add 2g/s to all idle airflow cells (base running airflow)
Set 0-400rpm idle timing to 26deg
Set 800-1200rpm idle timing to 22deg
Adjust closed loop commanded AFR to target 14.7:1 in all cells from 93deg coolant temp to 232degF
Set spark advance correction to 2deg in your first cell and 8 deg in the last cell. Highlight and smooth
Set spark retard correction at -2deg in the first cell and -8deg in last cell. Highlight and smooth.
Increase airflow adder for AC on by 10%
Set idle RPM to 950. (Does that seem high?)
(Note: That should give you a bise idle that runs without surging or dieing. With those mods you can probably work it down to 18-20deg of timing at an 850 rpm idle. If you see your fuel trims continuing to climb at idle you can force open loop at idle to keep it constant. It should run and drive really well with that setup, if it doesn't the tune is bad.
Thoughts? Concerns? Advice? I definitely don't want to hurt the engine on its first start up.
I am still not 100% sure on break in for these engines.

Right now though I am more worried about getting it to run and be driveable. Currently it will only start up and idle decent cold but when I try to start warm it will either not fire off or will fire up and stumble around 400 rpm until it builds itself back up to 950. It is killing me not being able to take it down the road.
I like advice and it sounds like you are in the right direction for sure! Thank you I am still undecided what to do. On one hand I have the option for $250 mail order base tune or try and trailer it to a dyno... Idk what to do... I just want to be able to drive it.
