Default 5.3 swap into s10

So Ive got a couple of questions?
run down of the swap: first time doing a efi set up
1997 S10 2wd had 4.3L
5.3 85k on milage out of a 2002 1500 Silverado
2001 3500 6.0L wire harness
2001 5.3 suburban pcm
HP Tuners for programming
stock 1997 s10 4L60e

1st ? Has anyone tried hooking up the stock temp gauge signal wire to the signal wire between the sensor and the pcm? or do you have to install a second sensor?

2nd ? before i did the swap the trans and motor was in perfect working order, the wire harness was wired for a 4l80e. but I repinned the pcm and added the wires and re pinned the 3 wires at the trans plug but after the swap and unlocking of the pcm of the vats I had an issue of the trans having no function from the pcm. ie no 1st gear , no OD, and no tcc lock up, could the pcm be bad? Or could it be in the hp tune? i have been on hp's forum but never get any response to my post.

other than these 2 things everything else works great just need to do a little motor tunning but dont want to till i figure out the tranny issue

1. The PCM needs the factory temp sensor connected to the PCM, and you cannot tap into it with another gauge as you could cause an offset in the reading. You can probably install the stock 4.3l temp gauge sender into the passenger side rear of the head to get your stock temp gauge to work.

2. What trans was the PCM programmed for when you opened it up in HP tuners? Was it already a 4L60e or was it a different trans with a segment swap?

Double check all your PCM connections and that everything was repinned correctly. Double check Trans Ground wires.

Do you have a VSS reading in the scanner?

Yes, the temp sensor needs to be a "second" sensor for the temp gauge. Mine is in the head, just like said.

The HP tuners forum kind of sucks. MOST of those guys are no help. Feel free to pm me if you want. I have done the swap, and "kind of" know my way around HPT.

thank you for the temp sensor answers,

I will tell you I have gone over the wiring at least 10 times and have checked the pin outs with the pcm disconnected doing a continuity check on all the wires between the pcm and trans. yes the orig pcm set up from factory was a 4l60e so i didnt think much about it when it came time to unlock with HPT I only did the basic changes like vats, gear ratio and tire size. as far as the vcm scanner it is reading from the trans like the vss and what gear position I have even tested the trans with a shaffer tester and the trans works great on it. Ill post my latest tune and log below.

Mines a 1982 S10. I ended up doing a full on custom harness from prk in Mesa. The dashboard stuff is all standalone. I don't have a tach. Gas gauge, temperature, oil pressure, etc all direct wires. Speedometer I had to take the computer output to a servo motor to spin the speedo cable.

One thing - run new dash grounds. They suck on the S trucks. Makes battery voltage, coolant temp, oil pressure all read erratic.

10-4 on grounds; this is true for many vehicles! Eons ago, on my '80 F-100, had erratic gauges. The more I grounded stuff in the engine compartment and under the dash, the better it liked it! When in doubt, ground it! lol

well guys I can tell you I am no stranger to S10's. this is my 8th build but it is the first 2nd gen and my first efi set up. but my 5th LS swap. I have done the ground upgrade which is the first thing I do with all of them. all my gauges work great except the temp which i now have working by adding the second sensor

Glad you got it working. if it came across I was accusing you of being a noob, I wasn't. Just sharing my experience in case it was helpful.

FWIW, when the ground goes bad, my temps go up and my voltage goes down. I think I need to add another ground.

Hey guys I don't wanna hijack this thread but I had a question on the IP harness grounds. I got a '92 extended cab and which grounds r u talking about upgrading? There is a 10 awg ground for the IP that comes out of c100 and bolts to the engine block. Is that the wireason u guys upgrade? Or are you talking about all the little grounds in the cab under the dash?
again sorry abut hijackin!
