thats a good alternative gametech and for people using factory gauge sets that may be the way to go. but for a lot of us we are doing something similar to joes setup above and using this as the primary mount, also a double din radio may not fit or function in our vehicles. also cost is an issue as well. a decent android radio that actual responds and functions quickly and is reliable is usually $300+ where as I'm looking at an 75-100 tablet, $35 dongle, and $10 magnet mount directly on my old gauge location. then its directly in front of line of sight where I can monitor it and use it for speedo, rpm, etc my primary gauges not just additional. but none the less its still a good alternative and may be suitable for others in different situations.
so now the question is.....what tablets are people using for gauge function and gauge function alone that you are having good luck with and what apps or mods are you using to have it power on and off with ignition power(or are you just manually doing it every start up/shut down?)

I'd recommend NOT buying a $50 Chinese tablet. Connectivity, screen resolution, and glare are a major major issue.
I'd personally recommend picking up one of the budget Galaxy tablets for $100-130 with putting an anti-glare screen on it.

that's funny joe, that's the exact thing I was looking at. was a galaxy tablet...like a year old model but brand new so it was cheap but since I'm doing something so basic with it I don't need the latest and greatest. good idea on the anti glare screen cover though

I started using a visor designed to go over a tablet mounted to a drone controller. Very cheap. Even with it, the glare is unbearable at times.
Get a decent tablet with good backlighting and anti glare screen protectors. The cheap tablets are OK, but they're not great.

I think I'm making the switch to a PiDash for the megasquirt this coming year.
If I was using OBD-II, I would definitely stick to a quality tablet and RealDash.
Make sure that the tablet is wired in to be charging with the car off.
This was my biggest crutch, as the battery would die in the tablet after a few days of not driving.

My plan was theet are apps to control the tablet to fire up when it sees power and turn off after whatever time you set when it removes power. Then just wire in the controller off ignition power source and your good to go. Start car, tablet sees power and fires up, turn off and it kills itself.

Joe, can I make a recommendation that you consider a turbocharger for your car 
As far as apps to make the tablet come on when powered up and turn off otherwise, from what little I looked into that it would require rooting a tablet, which every time I've rooted something it's been a pain in the *** and hasn't worked half of the time.

There's no less than a dozen apps that can do it now. They run in the background and you changed the settings so when it detects power change(car off, car starting, etc) it cycles from on to off or vice verse

I'm using mine in a Colorado ls turbo swap setup. i reworked the engine harness and tied the serial data wire into the oem truck wiring and use the stock under dash obd2 plug just fine. just a tablet update, i bought a lightly used Samsung tab 4 7" deal for $55 off flea bay and it works like a charm.

sorry for the delayed response, i didn't see you comment prior. when searching i found "autosleeper auto on and off app". puts tablet to sleep when power removed and wakes up when powered on. my tablet has like a two week standby time so this works for me, any longer and i have to physically turn it on but that's it

just an update ELQUEfor, gonna swap over to "tasker" app, cost $3 but i am going to use it to turn off display and wifi,gps, etc when power removed and re-enable when power applied. this will put it full standby mode without the hassle of powering off and locking, etc. some of the issue with the auto off thing. also once you turn off data services and screen, the device will stay with power for several weeks since most everything that draws power is off, also allows very quick boots to be ready to roll. which using this as my main gauges is nice to have. still playing with it tho, if anyone has better ideas please post up
