Default missfire driving me nuts!

here are the symptoms:
the car missfires under any load and slightly while idling, ses flashes when cruising (random multiple missfires code).
here's some history of the problem, it started with a single miss every 10 or so minutes apart while in 6th under load. then the misses started getting worse thorough out the day untill it reached the condition above. it almost felt like a broken valvespring ( cause it happened om my car before).

we hooked the car to the scanner and it showed # 5 missfiring , so we change all the plugs to be safe and try again, now 1, 4,5 are missing.
so to keep it short here is what we did:

-swapped plug wires
-used a different coil and moved it to several locations
-did a compression check
- leak down test
- pulled valve covers and checked for broken springs
- pulled pushrods and checked for straightness

all had no result on the miss.

what can it be?

could it be a bad crank positioin sensor? cam sensor?

for some reason i keep thinking it could be that the reluctor wheel on the crank loosened up ( he just put in a new eagle crank), could that be the problem?
is there any way to check that?

GAH! i don't either! my car is doing almost the same thing and it's killing me.
Mine sputters at anything above 1/4 throttle.
If i put it in drive and hold the brake and hit the throttle it does fine up till it gets to 1,400rpm, then at 1,500rpm it sputters, sort of sounds like a ghetto rev-limmter.
I was told it might be a bum MAF. Haven't been able to take it any where to see what code it's throwing. (short on cash)

For your car I'd say it's probably a crank/cam sensor if it's running that bad.
I don't know about checking it though. I'm just now learning the fancy heavy stuff my self trying to figure out why my car is being a heap.

well, i doubt i was any help but hey! your not alone! lol

Good luck.

have you tried injectors?

Misfires are generally caused by plugs, plug wires, and injectors very seldom its something else.

2 possible things here that i have been through. one on a friends car he had a pushrod SNAP.. yeah not bend snap and that obviously caused it.. then check you plug wires.. start your car somewhere with it pitch black and see if you see one of them arcing.. also check your plugs.. do the cheap **** first before you assume bad

swap injectors free check and easy to do. Start with your most likely suspects and you'll save time. I'm a mechanic and times money when I run into something like this a misfire on one cylinder i check to see if i'm getting spark at the plug if i am i check the plug if the plugs good, i swap the injector with one from another cylinder. I rarely have to go any farther than that.

good point cody, i'll give the injectors a try. ( though the guy told me he just had them flowed and cleaned less than 1000 miles ago???)

black transam , i already pulled the pushrods out and checked them and the springs.
plugs are new and so are the wires ( i also tried using a different set just to make sure)

sometimes you'll clean them and the problem will go away but then the problem will come back very soon afterwards and if thats the case then that injector will need to be replace if its the problem.

My car is now doing the same thing as you explained, running like crap all the time. Constant misfire.
If you guys manage to figure out what's going on please post it!
My car is pretty much useless and it's my only form of transportation.

Time to pump up the tires on that 12yr old Christmas mountain bike.
