Default Tuning Experts Needed, Questions Inside?

Simply what is causing this popping. My reply is more detailed and was added at 11-29-2004 08:10 AM. Tell me what you think it is.

The only thing is that it did it before the cam install and after the cam install. The only thing he could have bent that would have remained un changed would be a valve and I would think it would show missfires.

since it did it before the cam, id say it cant be a pushrod since new pushrods were installed with the cam after it started the popping.

no, it still does it....but only at wot or anything damn close to it. i can still get on it, and it will pull hard...and as long as im not at wot, everything is fine. but once i go wot, it does it. it has been doing it occasionally at idle, but if i give it a little gas and hold the idle steady at about 1100 or 1200, it wont pop at all. but it doesnt always do it when im idling, i drove back from DC on sat and i was in stop and go traffic for 2 hours, and nothing happened, but last night i went to the mall and it did it.

There are only so many things that cause backfires. (Unburnt fuel exploding in the exhaust) By your write ups it's virually impossible that it's a pushrod. The tune pretty much eliminates raw fuel getting dumped in. And you changed plugs. So a bent valve is the most likely since it would allow the exhaust to get out early. Did you do a compression check? Is it always on the same side (if you can tell)? That's where I'd look.

yup bent valve, or maybe at the worst a headgasket the has the gap burnt out of the center between the bores maybe? or maybe its a tps sensor that is acting up maybe??? have you checked all your sensors right?
definatly do a compression check, that will tell you what is going on.. and then go from there,
i still havent gotten the file yet either, jes

Sorry, I haven't sent it. I will send it though when I get around to it, very busy right now.

Maybe we should look into a compression check. The only thing about a bent valve is I would think it would act up all the time. It acts up sometimes at idle, never at cruz, and all the time at wot.

Guess we won't know until a compression check is done.

I don't think it is a head gasket as he is not running hot nor is any fluid look like it is in his oil.

well, last night i was on the interstate, and i decided to play a little...and apparently the popping is gone. after i left the mall i tried again on the way to dinner, and it still didnt do it. ill try again when i leave my ship and ill post up again. i havent done anything to the car except the compression test, and when i hooked everything back up, the pass side coil packs werent hooked up all the way, so when i started the car i threw an ses light...but since i knew what it was for i just disconnected the batt for a few mins to clear it. then i drove home and didnt drive it again until the next day when i was on the insterstate... ::

that cam wide LSA usually doesnt build a ton of cylinder pressure, closing flanks of cam arent that aggressive or anything. See if you can find other guys stock heads compression results with C2 cam. Its not silly high, just higher then Id expect with that cam. Thats stuff I usually see on cams designed to build cylinder pressure... motors with 10.8-11.2:1 compression ratio
